We just started construction today? We had a lot of problems with the school suporting our building program so we moved out to a local empty factory.
The owner went belly up and walked away one day and left all the equipment and tools in the shop. we made an offer to the land lord that if he gave us the use of the shop for the next 4 weeks we the team would clean out all the junk. he said ok.
Then we found the owner of the shop and told him that if he donated all the machines and tools to out team we would give him a tax write off, this way he would not have to pay the back rent he owed or pay to remove all the equipment. he said ok.
Then we got a local garbage company to donate a dumpster for us to dump the trash and garbage, last night 2 adults and 2 students loaded 1.96 tones of junk in the dumpster. today we filled a 2nd dumpster with more than last nights total.
Not too shabby........

well, we have had our own problems

lets see, the high school students got too excited and were arrested by umass security... OOPS... hehe. it was rather funny, but it sorta put me in trouble too.

lets see, then the h/s students had exams for the entire 2nd week.

accounting was a big problem and i cannot order anything for the robot over $150 myself and have to go through some fella who wants to handle all the accounting and takes a few days to get things done.

hmmm, what budget?

hmm, we have no engineers.

hmm, we barely have funding...

hmm, and we have a prototype that runs on wheels and has everything on top trying hard to hold on to the wooden frame.

should i be taking pictures? hehe...

well, with all this happening, i still think it's a good year.... i cant believe it myself. we're much better off than last year..

by friday, we'll the robot 60% done. Darn parts arent coming till Thursday.... which means more delays....ahhhh!!!

good luck all..

-anton

ps. can i borrow Joe Johnson now?

i stilll say the umass cop people were a bit overzealous in arresting us...but my parents found the incident as amusing as anton seemes to have, so no harm done.
and we did get to a good start...for maybe 3 days were were right on schedule with no arguments...then we had to vote on a design (which eventually lead to somepeople becoming dissatisfied with us and leaving)
mike who got a record while hanging out at the umass phyisics club

Our robot is still only a Virtual Virtuoso.

But... Lord willing and the creek don't rise, this
situation will be fixed tomorrow when we begin building
(FINALLY!).

This year's competition is a little different from the years before. I know everyone know that already, but my point is that because there won't be a much robot pushing against robots, the design doesn't require teams to aim for a really tough robot this year... but rather a delicate robot that can do things accurately. There are some teams out there who already started construction, but for us, we are choosing to make sure the design of the robot satisfy the range of parameter we decided at the beginning when we chose our strategy… That means lots of prototyping, lots of drafting/CADing, and not as much trying to build a working robot but to actually construct the robot out of the drawings and know it will work. So we are probably still in the prototyping phase.

i agree with you (about the no need for sturdy design cuz robots shouldnt be fighting) in theory but in practice i think that there will be contact between teams, mostly because driving the bots isnt the easiest thing, and theres a large degree of human error. and when you have 4 people driving 4 very different bots (and possibly...no probably...racing to be first on the bridge) it will develop a fair degree of contact. also when the bot goes over the bridge it will land with a good deal of force. i think that this year teams cant afford to not consider that there will be contact and damage done to their bot during the matches when designing it.

We just started building on Thursday, and even then just the frame. We have our robot 96.4% complete in inventor, and feel it should take only a week to ten days to build. We hope to have the last week to take it apart and start over.

The frame looks nice, though!
