Since this is such a large event, why not split the draft into two separate drafts like usual?

Because it's such a large event. You only split into two tiers if there aren't enough teams. Since there are enough FRC teams for every FF team to get 3 FRC teams, you use 1 draft. This has been done before, most recently Orlando and Palmetto.

Although it may seem unfair, you can only split the draft when not enough teams are available.

I've got a worse one.

On the other hand, L.A. happens to be my home event--I've only missed 2 L.A. Regionals, both due to being in college and not on spring break during the event. And I have two back-to-back picks...

Any event with over 54 teams can be a full sized draft.
Tomorrow night's Virginia draft will also be a full sized draft.
