Seniors: Want 5K for college?

Posted by Vince Wilczynski at 2/15/2001 2:05 PM EST

Engineer on team #124, Whalers, from New London / Montville/ Williams School and Notheast Utilities / US Coast Guard Academy.

The ASME $5K college scholarship (for a sr. active on a FIRST team, nominated by an ASME member active with FIRST, for ME or ME Technology study) has yet to receive any applications. While teams are busy readying for the 'bot in the box' deadline, it would be a shame to leave this easy money on the table. The application deadline is 1 MAR, and the full details are on page 3 of the 2001 FIRST rulebook - scholarship section.

We don't have any ASME members or student members associated with our team...otherwise we would have at least one application!

Isn't it for an engineering-based major? That limits me.

To find ASME members in your area that may be participating in FIRST (many ASME members volunteer at the events and may not be associated with a team) you can contact the ASME Regional Director for your part of the country. These folks can be found at http://www.asme.org/regions/regionmap.html#4 .

Scholarship application materials must be postmarked by March 1, 2001.
Download the simple application from the ASME website: http://www.asme.org/educate/k12/firs...cholarship.htm

For any questions, please contact Theresa Oluwanifise or Edie Ervin at the ASME Education Department OluwanifiseT@ASME.org, or ErvinE@ASME.org, or 1-800-843-2763.

Is the ASME scholarship limited to what schools we must apply to inorder to get this scholarship? And what if there isn't an ASME member on your team? Could it be an ASME member of another team to nominate you? Cuz if you can, let me know! I'm poor, lol I need these scholarshipsto get into college.

The scholarship has to be applied to a Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology program. This is the first year of the scholarship, so the sponsors are learning from the experience. As the "rules" are now written, there is no requirement that the ASME member and the student be from the same team, but both must participate in FIRST. With the "global link" of FIRST (in part demonstrated by the connections teams form at the competitions and via the net) and the emphasis of alliances, one could present the case (in their application) that the simple requirement that both member and student be associated with FIRST achieves the goals of the scholarship. The key component in the student/member relationship will be the member’s nomination letter concerning the student’s technical, creative and leadership contributions to the FIRST team.
