thermal cutoff protection on VanDoor Motor

Posted by Anton Abaya at 2/18/2001 2:44 PM EST

Coach on team #419, Rambots, from UMass Boston / BC High and NONE AT THE MOMENT! .

according to what i read to motors 101 in the white paper section of CD, they have it.

yesterday, i was playing around with the arm we have using the vandoor and i stalled it a several times to trip breakers and testing out the rigidity of the arm. eventually, after doing this over and over again, i started smelling something funny and the vandoor started smoking.

why? i thought the thermal protection thing would slow it down to a complete stop or soemthing?

What you are smelling is probably just the grease in the worm gear assembly boiling. it isn't that bad, but it isnt good either...

The thermal protection prevents any damage to the motor magnets from heat, and kicks in at a very high temperature.

Great luck, and see you in Fla.
