Teams together off the field

Posted by Carolyn Duncan at 03/14/2001 7:04 PM EST

Student on team #495, The Pack, from Jamestown High School and VBEP/Raytheon/Saic.

Is it me or does it seem like most teams are very recluse? At the VCU regionals most teams seemed like they didn't want to be around other teams if they weren't scouting or planning a strategy. I think team 122 was awesome for allowing me to hang out with them away from the competition. We had a lot of fun. Also, the teams that let me dance with them at the team party, especially the Tucker Tiger, were also grrrrrrreat. Maybe Nationals will be different.

Hey Carolyn,
this is Stephen, from team 122 (from the hotel room). I assume that means you CAN go to nationals. I guess your mentors weren't too mad. Good luck, can't wait to see you there

Hey back at cha. Yeah, we're going to nats. However, we a few rules. Bed checks, curfew, dress code (I don't have any ideas why), team unity time, all that kinda fun stuff, ya know? Heard you guys were going to PA. Good luck! Megan says she's jealous, me too. Tell every one I said hi. Oh! When do the pix from VCU go online?

Yeah, we did get some rules for nats. The reason is that our mentors were not very happy with the way we acted..... Up until 5:30a.m., all in one room, the fact that I was wearing a wife beater over a black bra in a room full of guys that were not on my team,... the list continues. We are a rookie team with mostly rookie mentors so go figure. Since we were up so late people slept in the stands rather that taking up precious pit space. Have any of you ever slept at competition when you had nothing to do? I rest my case. (Ha Ha Laugh Laugh)

Bed checks, that's a little harsh. Anyway, it depends which pictures your talking about. Most of them should be on by now, but I'd have to ask Brandon, he's in charge of the web page. If you're talking about the pictures of you and me, well, let's just say those aren't going up. It's not that I would prevent it (well, I would, but I don't have to), but we had a previous problem with qoute "inapropriate pictures." Basically, if we don't want the administration to revoke our web page, those pictures aren't going up.

Yeah, ok. I understand about the pix deal. The ones of us may be a little too "riskay." But it was fun posing for them though, don't cha think?! I thought Brandon was going to have another page with all the pix you guys could't put on the school page. As for the bed checks, yeah that's rough but we're hoping to get that toned down.

I have our team laptop and hence the pictures here. Anyone up for blackmail? (just kidding I assume 495 is still going to Natn'ls. You're riding to Florida with us right? Man that'll be a fun trip.

Are there any other teams that do this sorta thing, share buses (and at times adults) and whatnot? Are there a lot of sister teams out there, beside the normal camaraderie of course?

I don't think that's always the case. Our team is sponsored by Ford along with a bunch of other teams in the area, and we all work on our robots at the same place, so we all know each other pretty well. Just as an example, two of the Ford teams (301 and 313) took home an award at Western Michigan for sharing tools, food, and even engineers (I am serious, they work on each other's robots when they get bored!) I don't know how it was at VCU, but maybe it was just that teams had a lot of things to fix and didn't really have time to be social. Hopefully you'll find nationals to be a different experience.

I know that my team does nothing during the comp. They sit around in the stands playing cards and listening to cd players.

We'll share engineers... When we go visit other teams in the pits sometimes its hard to ignore a technical problem... we definitely helped a couple of teams this weekend at Long Island and made some good friends.

if you're looking for hired guns... come around to see 190.

My team, Merrimack 166, is always up for some socializing in the down time at competitions and such! Our favorite people have to be Nashua 151, they lend us helpers engineers, and feed us . We work at their playing field and are good friends with many of the team members there. They help us out alot and we had kids helping them to finish their robot . Any teams who might be staying in or near the Holiday Inn Family Suites in Orlando should talk to someone on 166 so we can hang out at nationals after we get back to the hotel!

At the Long Island regionals, people did tend to keep to themselves a bit. Michael and I ended up hanging out with a few people from team 250 after the team party at their hotel (we live 5 minutes away). So, they were nice enough to invite us over, and we had fun sitting around talking. But at Nationals there seems to be a lot more time for socializing. Especially since last year we had a bit more time between matches, and everyone's robot is usually functioning pretty well by then. And it's always a lot of fun to hang around with new friends in the parks. :-)

Are you joking, last year we had NO time between matches in Long Island. It seems like I was always in a match, or staging for a match, or going from the pits to the stage to get ready for a match...

This year in LI we had a bunch of time, especially cuz the matches are in sets of 3...
