Unhappy My RoboRio needs a doctor

Hello I am a leader of Potential Energy team 3323 in NH. We received a RoboRio in our KOP this year. We then looked up the schematics for wiring it in and made a prototype board. the RoboRio is receiving 12v of power with a 10amp circuit breaker. This seems to be a sufficient amount of energy but when we turned it all on we waited about 30 seconds and then our status light came on. After that it flashed 2x repeatedly. Now we know this means something is wrong with the software so we are going to try re-imaging it. However, the power light refuses to go on. We are all very confused at how we are getting no power yet the status light works. Is this a problem of needing it re-imaged or what? All of our programmers and electrical members are confused as well as our mentors no one knows what could be wrong. If you have any suggestion as to how we may be able to get our power light to work we would be greatly appreciated.

1058 is in the same process right now. If we get it to work I will let you know so we can help you out.

Re: My RoboRio needs a doctor

Did you make sure that you connected the PDP to the RoboRIO through CAN? I'm pretty sure that the PDP needs to be connected via CAN For it to work. Also make sure that you put the 10 and 20 amp fuses in the PDP.

Re: My RoboRio needs a doctor

Yes we did make sure we also connected the PDP through the can ports though we don't know if it is necessary, and we did put the 10 and 20 amp fuses in.

In order for the RoboRIO to work you do not need to have it wired via CAN. The PDP can function fine without any can interfacing.

Also make SURE the 10 amp and 20 amp fuses are in their respective slots - the 20 amp fuse on the left giving power to the PCM and VRM, and the 10 amp fuse on the right for the RoboRIO power - see image below

The RoboRIO should be plugged into the CONTROLLER POWER slot with 18 - 22 wire guage.

Re: My RoboRio needs a doctor

emileh3467,
We currently have wired it this way. When it did not work we tried connecting can as well. and it still didn't work.

Conor Ryan,
Yes we also followed these directions.

Our members just tried re-imaging the RoboRio and it still doesn't respond or work correctly. We will call for support Monday. Thank you to everyone that gave suggestions and advice.

Re: My RoboRio needs a doctor

asnell16,

Have you tried looking at the RoboRIO manual and its LED indicator section?

Confirm your PDP is outputting a proper 6.8-18V output through the CONTROLLER PWR port with a MultiMeter if you get a chance.

Re: My RoboRio needs a doctor

On thing that might help, is to post a couple of clear, large pictures of your electronics setup, so we can see if the wiring is right. It's easy to connect something to the wrong place, without realizing it. I know because I've done it.

If you get some more folks to confirm that it's all wired correctly, you can rule that out.

The CAN will be used for logging PDP data, hence the robot rule requiring that CAN be connected to the PDP. It is not needed for operation of the RoboRio nor the PDP.

This sounds very odd indeed. Your power LED is not lit, yet the status LED is flashing? Sounds like you are in fact getting power, but the power LED may not be functioning properly.

Can you proceed with the SW update?

Re: My RoboRio needs a doctor

And one more thing - is your power plug all the way seated in the roboRIO power socket and screwed down? Doesn't explain the power LED not on, but the status light should light up shortly after you apply power. The 30 second delay is suspicious.

Re: My RoboRio needs a doctor

Possibly, currently we are re-imaging it and after that we will see if it still functions without the power LED. Also yes if was properly screwed in. The 30 second delay was for the first time we gave it power after that the status light came on almost immediately.
