Adjusted Robot Ranking

Hello CD,

While watching the last few weeks of competitions, I came up with an idea for a quick ranking system that would, using a very simple equation, estimate a robot's value in eliminations, for scouting purposes. The two goals of this ranking system would be to reduce the value of the Co-Op stacks to that of a grey tote stack, and also eliminate the value of the litter, as they're not really, for the most part, scored by the robot. Here's the equation:

ARR=((.2*COOP)+AUTO+TOTE+CONTAINER)/MP

I made a google doc for the Reading District Event that takes copied and pasted data from here and calculates their ARR rank and the difference between their Qual Rank and their ARR to sift out the teams who are ranked highly because of litter and co-op stacks.


What do you guys think about this method of ranking for scouting?

Well I like it - after all, it moves us up 4 places!

By the way, our team sympathized with you guys in match 32 today. Like us two matches earlier, I imagine you felt something like a groom left at the altar. We had the same experience two matches earlier, putting 3 yellow totes on the step with what we thought was an agreement to finish on the other side, but it didn't happen. That coopertition thing can be tricky.

Are points not points? If they have an HP that hits litter points that's still valuable. Non robot scoring is fine, and some robots may be designed to do litter.
Co-op reduction is fine to reduce.

And remember folks, it's an estimation. Nothing beats real scouting

As Brennan said, this in absolutely no way replaces eyes on the field watching matches, and this algorithm is made to judge the robot only. The reason I left litter out is that, generally, alliances will only have one person throwing litter, rather than the three robots that are out on the field scoring points. Therefore, if HP duties are split evenly in a 12 match per team event, that means a given team's HP only throws noodles in four matches. I'm making a lot of assumptions here, but you get my drift- I believe that the total Litter score is even less reliable of a method of judging a team than the other point totals.

Calculated contribution to winning litter (CCWL) might be useful. Of course, watchful eyes actually following matches will be more reliable.

Personally don't think any auto ranking system will be good for this years gameplay..too many variables and changes in scoring. I certainly take then all with a grain of salt.

I like the coopertition reduction idea. I'm going to mention that to our scouting team.

But I agree with others that litter should be left in. Litter points in elims count exactly the same as they do in quals. Also, litter scores in containers, not just from being thrown.

If a team makes 2 complete 42 point stacks, for 84 points, 12 of those points will be from litter in the container. That's 14% of their points.

The real point is that the performance of an alliance is highly nonlinear this year. You certainly don't need three robots working the tote chutes, nor three getting RCs off the step, nor three mining the landfill. As such, if your team includes one of the best litterers at the event, yes, zero this out for alliance selections. Likewise, if your first pick has a great litterer, don't look for it in the second round. Heck, if you expect to get all four RCs and stuff all seven with noodles and stack them, the litterer doesn't matter nearly so much. The bottom line is that, if your alliance doesn't have someone who can get the great majority of the litter across the field, you're better off not throwing at all, or at least waiting until the second half of the match.

Good solution; if you put yellow totes on the step, you could put gray ones on the platform. The wrinkles I can think of are:

• If an auto tote stack was scored, only one of the yellow totes should score, as there's now only one action required to move the whole stack to the step.
• If an auto stack is deposited anywhere near the landmark and transferred to the step, and the team can't adjust this for playoffs, you might have to move the auto stack out of the way in playoffs.
