A little of subject but....
Posted by Jason Leslie at 04/09/2001 7:54 PM EST
Other on team #157, Aztechs, from Assabet Valley RTHS Alumni (Class of 1998) and . From what I have read on this site in different posts make me wonder something. How many great teams will we lose to another type of competition because of the way this season was? I remember a great team Plymoth High School. You know those great folks that brought us Rumble at the Rock. They left to pursue (correct me if I am wrong) electric car racing. This season I have read the complaints of many people on how this season went and some have said that they have thought "Will I be back next year" this may be something one person is thinking, but who knows, maybe there are teams out there that are saying it. I have also read people saying bring back the violence and with Battle Bots trying to do a high school level event and with robotica (which I think any team in FIRST could win) how many teams will pursue these options? Also I haven't seen the final ranking for the Nats but from what a gathered from the seeding there were A LOT of huge teams out there that got a taste of reality or there ego's put in check by the folks at FIRST when they didn't do as good as they have in the past (you know those teams that placed in the top 10 for the last 5+ years, were quarte finalists at regional this year and then seeded in the bottome 10 of there division because of who they teamed with). So for me to stop rambleing I'll leave you with this. What ever you teams decide to do with yourselves just remember that FIRST will save that team number of yours for when you return. Great job to all and hope you get to all the mini meets out there. Jay |

Speaking of big guys placing last...

Student on team #240, Mach V, from Jefferson Monroe High School and Visteon. In Reply to: A little of subject but.... Posted by Jason Leslie on 04/09/2001 7:54 PM EST: I was disappointed by some of the "better" teams. Some that we played with were highly egotistical. They believed that their robot was the best and only they could do the simple jobs along with everyone else. It is truly frustrating when a team insist that they do something and fail when another team mate was perfectly capable. They feel that their reputation is hurt if they do what is best for the alliance, however untrue this may be. This comment is not directed to any team in particular, especially team #47 as we never had the pleasure of being partners. |

Coach on team #47, Chief Delphi, from Pontiac Central H.S. and Delphi Automotives Systems. In Reply to: Speaking of big guys placing last... Posted by Nick on 04/09/2001 9:52 PM EST: I think that this year the very point you make was very frustrating to the stragety coaches. No mater the level of team when discussion was held in the two min. prior to the match each team wanted to showcase their robot and its abilities. In many cases seperating fact ( what the machine and drivers can do ) and fiction ( what the team thought the robot could do ) was a real concern. This is where competitive assessment was very important. Knowing the strengths of the 12 was hard but necessary to get max. scores. We all need to consider a very important point: Many things can go wrong from the established plan. Robots do break or respond odd at times. Drivers do make errors. And most of all, the forces of nature we are competiting against are often different then we expect. To each and every alliance we were with at the regionals ( UTC, NY, MI ) and the nationals I commend you for your great machines and the skill and effort of your drivers. Scores do not tell the whole story and often do not show the situation as it occured in both high and low scores. It was an honor for Chief Delphi #47 to play a match with each and every team no matter the outcome. I know in my heart that each team gave it their best effort and that is all that can ever be asked of any team. Thank You. |

I wonder if any type of assurances that the game will change will be put out before the request for entry fees is made? It was very disappointing this year to find out that the defensive game we enjoy playing was left out AFTER the $9000 check was collected. If there are dissatisfied customers out there, and from what I heard there were quite a few, the use of an "innovative" new strategy might call for some advance marketing. Competition is not violence, violence is violence. There seems to be some confusion and overkill to eliminate direct competition from the game in the name of stopping violence. I think the lack of direct competition this year really took away from the game. We plan to be back, hopefully a little stronger and wiser. I'm sure FIRST will do what's right and return to a more directly competitive game. |
