FIRST teams in Ithica

Hi,
I am a high school senior who has been doing FIRST for three years. Next year I will be going to Cornell University in Ithica, NY, and I was wondering if there are any teams nearby. I want to continue with FIRST and I was hoping to be able to help out/work with a team next year. Thanks.

Cornell and Ithaca High had a rookie team this year (639 I think). It was founded by Patrick Dingle, a Team 190 Alum.

That's correct.... We've got a team, and we're currently planning for next year. The team is between Ithaca High School and Cornell University, and we will be seeking one or more major corporate sponsors as well. Feel free to send me an email at prd8@cornell.edu for more information.

As far as other opportunities at Cornell, there is the FSAE racecar, Robocup, Robohockey, BRAIN, as well as several other automotive teams. Many of these teams are very difficult to become involved with (especially for freshmen), due to the enormous number of students trying to join each team. However, since FIRST is very new here, there is still plenty of room for involvement on our team!

While Patrick is probably right about it being hard for freshmen to get on teams for other competitions, I would think seriously about taking part in something besides FIRST. As much as I love this program, college is a place to try new things. In many respect FIRST lives in an artificial world. The field is idealized and so are the tasks. Which is not to say they are easy, just that random elements are removed to a large extent.

In these other competitions you learn more about designing for uncertainty. This is important. There is also the chance to "try out" an industry and see if you like dealing with their kinds of problems.

I guess that all depends on why you're doing FIRST in college. After leaving high school, I realized that to continue being in FIRST I could no longer do it for myself. And I didn't. This year I was in it for the kids (boy do I feel old). As I've said before, I'm just trying to do my part to make the world a better place. So if you want to do FIRST in college, please do but also make sure you're doing it for the right reasons.

While you're at Cornell, check out their FSAE Racing team (Upson Hall, Room 143, or http://fsae.mae.cornell.edu). They start recruiting a couple of weeks into the fall semester. FSAE is very similar to FIRST in that you're on a team of engineers working to complete a big project, but this time all of the engingeers are students, and you're building a formula racing car instead of a robot. It's very cool, Cornell's got a world-class team, and you get to drive the cars! BTW, that's me in the 2000 Cornell race car in that profile picture. Whatever you do, enjoy your time at Cornell...it's cold, but it's awesome.
