FIRST lost a family member today
Her name was Alison Parker, and before she was known as “a rising star in news casting” or “another senseless victim of gun violence”, she liked to build robots.
I didn't realize until I saw a small post on another web forum I frequent, Alison was an alum of FRC. She was on 1262, The STAGS from Piedmont Governor's School for Math, Science, and Technology in Martinsville, VA (her team picture in this link) Their team doesn't maintain a strong CD presence, with only one listed member having any activity in 2015. I didn't know her, nor her friend and camera man Adam, but I wanted to let the CD community know that we lost a former student, and hope that serves to remind everyone that every moment is precious. I came across a video (linked here) of her interviewing her old team for this year's game. Also, to acknowledge her colleague, Adam was a Hokie, and that's compliment enough for any man. Ut Prosim |

Re: FIRST lost a family member today
Wow, it is extra upsetting to see this now. Oddly enough, knowing you have the same connection with someone makes you feel like you almost knew them. To think she shared the same interests as us...
Very sad loss. Thank you for posting. |

Thanks for sharing that. I can see where she got her passion from. Such a loss. May her and Adam's memories be blessed!

Re: FIRST lost a family member today
Frank said a while back that 'when a member of the FRC community hurts, we all hurt,' and that is so true today.

Re: FIRST lost a family member today
I am very glad that this video is the last one I will see of Alison and will show it to my kids today so it will be theirs as well. She wouldn't have had to say that she was on the robotics team at that school for you to just *know* that she was. The excitement in her voice was very real.

Re: FIRST lost a family member today
Like Marshall from team 900 said...our team too also competed with (and against) 1262...(They picked us as alliance partners when we won at VCU in 2013) I didn't know Alison personally but probably saw her.
Its a very tragic thing when a young person loses their life in this manner. I can only imagine what her parents are going thru (I also most lost my oldest daughter to a gun shot years ago but not this) I can no way fathom how they may feel and how her former team mates and mentors feel. I hope they are able to heal and remember her memory. |
