Why Are Frozen Fish Orbiting Jupiter?

Hi all,

Dave Lavery from NASA is coming to Dephi to give a talk entitled "Why Are Frozen Fish Orbiting Jupiter?" on August 15th from 7:00-8:30pm at our facility in Troy, MI (1401 Crooks Road).

Public is welcome -- But... ... I need an RSVP from folks who are coming. (e-mail me at my work joseph.m.johnson@delphiauto.com)

We have room for about 100-150 folks in the facility we are hosting it in (RSVP now to save your seat).h

Dave provided me with the following thumbnail description of his talk:

"Why Are Frozen Fish Orbiting Jupiter?"

A provocative discussion about why NASA is exploring the solar system, the questions that they hope to answer, and some of the recent discoveries that have been made. This will include an examination of the robotic tools and spacecraft they use to examine the planets, and the people that build them.

"Who's Dave Lavery?" You ask.

You have seen him at the FIRST kickoff in 2002. You've seen him at the various NASA sponsored regionals. He is a great guy and a great speaker. I know you will enjoy his talk.

Hope to see you there.

One final note, we are working on a conference call & "Netmeeting" arrangement to allow folks outside the Detroit area to attend via the web. Let me know if you are interested, the more interest we have the more likely it will be that we pull it off.

Joe J.

Below is a more formal description of exactly who is Dave Lavery:

--------------------------------------------------

Dave Lavery
Program Executive for Solar System Exploration
NASA Headquarters

Mr. Lavery is responsible for executive oversight of the design and development of the next generation of planetary exploration
spacecraft, and the advanced technologies to enable them. He is
currently leading the development of the Mars Exploration Rover-2003 mission, the joint European-U.S. Mars Express mission, and the joint Japan-U.S. MUSES-CN mission, all scheduled to launch in 2003. In addition, he heads the Mars technology development program, which is creating new approaches to remote exploration by robotic systems. Prior to these assignments, Mr. Lavery led the NASA Telrobotics Technology Development Program for 12 years.

Is this the same talk Dave gave to our team and its potential sponsors? I think it is.

If so, it's great fun. It really got everyone excited, Dave's *always* entertaining, to say the least, and you even learn a little something to.

If I were in the area, I'd go again. But, since I'm not, that leaves a seat open that someone else definitely should take.

Dave is our lead engineer.
That said, he is a really cool guy.
Feed him Krispy Kremes and he will do anything, including design a Nats winning robot.
Fortunatly/unfortunaly, the nearest KK store is 40 mintues away, so teh students do alot of teh work.

He is always entertaining. Espeically when talking about his days at Tech.
