BBIQ Robot under the lid

With all the recent putting down of Battlebots/BattlebotsIQ I decided to post some pictures of my team's battlebot for BBIQ(And some developmental pictures of the new design). Im just posting this to hopefully open people's minds a little more to what's out there - it's not just FIRST and Battlebots is not evil. The more you can do the better! Do Sumo bots too! =) Well here goes;

This is Checkmate, from Team Alpha Kai Omega, which is comprised of 7 members from Ramtech Team 59 (Miami Coral Park Senior High). I'm there Technical advisor and was a former member of the Ramtech team and am currently studying to be a mechanical engineer at the local university. (I mentor both FIRST and BBIQ if you're wondering...)

PS: Keep an open mind till you participate. I met a lot of great people at the IQ event. Gracious profesionalism was VERY common. Many instances of people that were about to match helping eachother, many lent parts, manpower, etc. I'd disagree to anyone who says that it isn't present. Also, it's not about the money, battlebots IQ was a huge loss to the owners of Battlebots. Keep this in mind, it hasn't been aired, nor has any money been made off of it.

One last comment - those are FIRST drill motors lol. One good way to put use to old kit parts!

Very nice looking work. Did you find that the drill motors were powerful enough by themselves? My friends and I are currently designing a Middleweight Battle Bot and are planning to use basically the same setup (drills for drive, chiapua for flywheel), but are a little concerned about the ~260W output of the drills. Also, are those 24V NiCad packs I see? If so, how did the motors perform at the increased voltage?

My current battery setup is:

2 24 volt Nicads for the EV Warriors(for flywheel)
1 12 volt Nicad (it's 2 12 volts running at parallel for extra amp hours)

The drill motors weren't impressive for pushing, but we didn't gear them down, our main weapon was the flywheel. I couldn't tell you how well they did because most of our matches consisted of two-three hits and it was over. Though, they moved us around and in one rumble our belts broke(for the flywheel) and we moved around well enough just no pushing power. Im sure if they were geared they would though. There was another FIRST team at BBIQ (I can't remember their name) they used Drill motors for drive (They won the NY regional I believe..) and did fine. All depends on the gearing im sure. But there are some things those motors wont push.
