2016 Safety Captain Help

Hey all fellow FRC members! I am currently the safety captain for Team 435. I was wondering if anyone could give me pointers on what to include or have readily available for the safety judges. I am planning to make a "safety portfolio" with a MSDS information sheet, a safety ppt, a team safety plan, and my team's safety quiz. Is there anything else should include? My team has never focused on safety before this year. Thank you in advance!

Any documentation regarding safety training, machine training, or safety outreach you have done in the past seasons. Be prepared to show them where your first aid kits/fire extinguishers/battery spill kits are located. Also, be ready to receive constructive criticisms from the judges on how to improve and what to do in the future.

Evacuation routes/plans for each event and your build location are great to show to Saftey Judges.
Preemptive plans for emergency situations also look really goodin the eyes of the saftey judges.

Hi, I am the Safety Captain from Team 2375. I completely agree with SafeSteven910. It is important to include those things, as well as make sure everyone on the team knows everything to do with safety.

In regards to the safety plan... basically everything you plan to do in the future with safety. Things such as how you will prevent incidents, how you will take care of incidents when they happen, checklists you have for safety, how you will teach people about safety, and how you will make sure the team stays safe in the future.

Also, recently, people have been using SDS instead of MSDS... they are pretty much the same thing though, and it doesn't hurt to continue having the MSDS.

Organization can also be included what you tell the judges. Having your pit labeled everywhere so you know what things are where shows that you keep things tidy. Speaking of keeping things tidy, not having any tripping hazards or things that could potentially hurt people.

Above, I mentioned checklists that you have for safety. I was talking with the safety mentor from Team 2486, and they said they use the checklists at the beginning and end of the competition day to make sure that the pits are safe. The checklist is towards the end of the safety manual along with an improvement sheet for things that you change.

Something you really should start doing, if you haven't already, is keeping track of incidents that happen. On our team, our reports include who was involved, what happened, how the situation was treated, and what we plan for the future to keep the incident from happening.
