Right Angle Adapter for VersaPlanetary Gearbox

The Killer Bees are proud to share this design with the FIRST community.
This is a great adaptation for use on your robots.
We have 2 of these on our machine this year and they work great.

Our students have done an excellent job creating a step by step Instructables tutorial on how to fabricate and implement this design

Enjoy!!

Re: Right Angle Adapter for VersaPlanetary Gearbox

Wonderful! This looks really handy, although not a ton easier than just using the Vex miter gears. What advantages would you say this method has over that?

Very clever! I'm sure we'll be using something like that in future years. Thanks for sharing

Is that a 775 proXL?
Does it have 4/3 the power because it's longer?
Where can I get mine?

Re: Right Angle Adapter for VersaPlanetary Gearbox

Great idea! Seems like a lot of extra broaching though

Is there a reason not to use a nut driver like this to connect to 1/2 hex shaft? Is there too much slop in these nut drivers?

Re: Right Angle Adapter for VersaPlanetary Gearbox

Very cool build, I'd never thought of using that Dewalt drive.

I love the detail in the step by step:

Quote:
Step 2: Remove Dewalt Right Angle Drill Attachment from packaging
... leaving nothing to chance!

Re: Right Angle Adapter for VersaPlanetary Gearbox

We actually used a very similar design for our intake.

Kinda blurry, but those vertical wheels are being powered through a similar design. Ours is actually belted through a custom gear box, then belted again!

VEX Pro request - 1/4" hex Versaplanetary output shaft.

Pretty slick Bees, great write up!

It would have to be steel or titanium otherwise it would fail easily because of the torque. It would be even weaker than the CIM motor output shaft, which fails at 29 N-m.

I hope that VEXpro will come out with their own right angle adaptor with 1/2 hex output with replaces the conventional output stage of the VP as it would greatly enhance the way they can be utilised.

Re: Right Angle Adapter for VersaPlanetary Gearbox

Awesome! I'll have to remember that these right angle adapters exist, nice little product.

Instead of broaching, I wonder if using a socket adapter for a drill (like this) and a 1/2" socket would be more feasible for most teams.

Should always read all the way to the end.

Code:
You can use this same Dewalt adapter in many other robotics applications.

These are some of the many things we have done:

1. Use a standard 1/2" socket adapter and a bronze bushing to create a 90 degree drive to 1/2" hex.

2. Broach a 1/4" bore XL timing pulley and provide bearing support on both sides of adapter for a compact belt drive solution.

3. Create a small hex-hex plug to adapt standard VexPro Hex-core Sprockets and Gears.

All sorts of other things are also now possible:

The 1/4" hex drive is a universal interface in power tool interfaces. Pivot drives, flex shafts and all sorts of other adapters are now available to use once you have a Versaplanetary gearbox which accepts a 1/4" hex drive.

Good Luck in all your robotic creations!

Very cool! We may want to use this at some point in other applications.

Definitely might be a good option.
