Licencing Agreement

If anyone has seen the 2003 Competition Manual, there is a note on Section 8.1, you will note that FIRST says Donated software can only be put on one PC. I know that last year, we were allowed to use more than one PC with the 3DS Max and AutoDesk. Are they talking about the 3DS and Autodesk Software, or are they talking about software you get as a donation from a sponsor?

They're talking about any software included with the kit, unless specifically told otherwise...as far as last year goes, section 8.1 is issuing the same ruling as was given by the Q&A team last year:

Q: Also, another question came up at my school. On how many computers we are allowed to install the software we received with our kit of parts?

A: The software you've been granted from Microsoft and Autodesk is a single-machine license. One machine, one copy. Not a server. Installing the software on multiple machines is a copyright violation.

If your team / school would like a site license or server license,
please contact the respective vendors.

could be any new microsoft product we get from FIRST, like last year we got frontpage 2002, office xp, microsoft project, maybe FIRST has some new software made by microsoft and there only limiting one installment on 1 machine only. i know they have 2 sets of policies

Schools - get a special microsoft office package w/ unlimted installments on virtually on any number of computers

then their the home usage which only allows 1 installment on a pc and one installment on a laptop. 2 installs all together

I know it's boring, but I would recomend reading the EULA for any software you have. The EULA for my copy of VC++, for example, says I can have it installed on as many computers as I want, as long as only one copy is in use at any given time. Because of this, I have it on my desktop, my laptop, and my test rig and it's 100% legal. At the very least, skim the EULA for the sections that cover this type of copying. You could be surprised.

I believe theres an option to transfer the license from one computer to another. Not clear about the details, but I remember hearing that you can INSTALL it on more than one computer at a time, just somehow when you want to use one installation, you 'move' the license from one computer to another computer. Not sure about the details, but you can try looking it up somewhere.

There's nothing saying Inventor and Max have to be together on the same computer, only that you can't have one of them on multiple computers. As long as you only have one computer with Inventor and one computer with Max you should be fine.

you can use the c-dilla license utility to transfer the license easily...

it outputs a little file you can stick on a diskette and move it to another computer. you have to import it off the disk with the same utility you use to export it.
