.mov to .avi

has anyone ever seen a program/codec that can encode/decode quicktime format in windows? I want to convert an avi to mov file.

ive seen and used programs to convert .avi to mpg and vise versa but never to .mov. I not sure if one even exists.

Apple quicktime actually does the encoding, you just have to get the Pro version. So you can get that, or use this freeware utility called Quickeditor. It'll do what you're trying to, and is shareware. I used it a while back to edit a movie trailer, so it was lying around on my hard dive. The people who make it stopped supporting it, so the file is hard to find. I was considering uploading it a server, but I did find a host.

Really though, why don't you use Windows Media 9 or DivX? They're both better codecs. The WM9 encoder is freeware, but it's a bit complicated to get good results... You have to manually define the size of the movie, and the data rate for both video and audio...

I found this program just the other day:

Rad Video Tools Select "The RAD Video Tools" This program is free, but they ask for donations through that amazon.com honor system thing.

When you open the program, select the file you want to convert and then press "Convert a file" and thats about it. You can convert mov to avi, mp3 to wav, and many other file types

I have had this program for a year or so, but never got it to work. I always get and error 'Error opening the audio input file'

Thanks alot for that, i'll try it out during the next few days.
I do use Divx alot, but am wondering(wanting to play) if quicktime is a better format. Every quicktime movie i have seen has been extremely good quality for the size.

Well, I've never encoded to DivX, so I can't say about that... I've compressed raw 3ds max animations using both WM8 and Quicktime, and WM8 gives better results at a given file size. /me shrugs
