did anyone else aim just die on them and give a message similar to one of these....
[23:10:22] *** Error logging into AIM: Error code 29: We think this means the AIM/ICQ servers are sick of seeing connections from your IP address. Wait a few minutes and try again. or the aim service is unavalable at the current time ????? |

Let me guess...
Let me guess....you're using Trillian?
If so, that happens every once and awhile, it used to happen to me where i would have to download update patches because AOL used to try to block Trillian users or something like that. |

yep, trillian, i can't stand the normal aim client. so much guess is they can distinguish who is using trillian now because the second message was what aim told me when i installed it
code 21 trillian error...anyone know it? update: i let it sit and now it works....but if anyone has an explaination for what it did that, i'd like to hear it, heh Last edited by Rob Colatutto : 02-01-2003 at 23:36. |

*Shrugs* This is why I always keep a version of aim around, just in case. Keep your eye on the trillian website, they are always very quick about patching after AIM blocks service.

That message is displayed when I log online, if I've open Trillian before logging onto the internet.
Maybe it's just me. - Katie Last edited by Katie Reynolds : 03-01-2003 at 19:27. |

I use GAIM and stuff like that happens to me about once a month. It only lasts for about 3 hours or so. I'd use AIM if AOL would update it...I think it's at version 1 or something. I don't think it even supports file transfer (which would be very nice for people that don't understand FTP uploading...).

actually aim does support file transfer, it's been updated recently (according to the popups it keeps giving me!), but i don't know what all those updates are.

actually, AOL, for some reason, has this horrible habit of giving independent AIM users the better version of AIM than the subscribing AOL users. It gets really nasty sometimes. I try to stay away from AOL as much as I can.

Trill gets my vote on this one
fully skinnable, not that AIM 'themes' crap which is useless, and serves to advertise. universal IM client (practically, hits the majors). no limit on buddies. has everything AIM+ has to offer and more. Jerry it's the BEST! the BEST i tell ya! |

Trillian is great when you want to flood someone with messages from 10 AIM screen names, 3 ICQ, 7 MSN, and 2 Y! accounts... But then again, that's some load for my computer's RAM... And obviously, Trillian is just great overall. Of course.
Has that spat between Trillian and AIM stopped yet? The last time AOL blocked Trillian was a while ago. |

If AOL blocks Trillian, it never lasts for long. With in two days, a patch is out that works around the block. Same goes for MSN and Yahoo. I think to some extent, they have all given up, assuming that enough people will still use thier client in place of a 'complicated' alternative. Little do they know how much people hate ads and popups.

Actually...AOL never really attempted to stop anyone from not using the AIM client. If I remember correctly, the last _major_ change is when they started using the OSCAR protocol which confused lots of people...but that wasn't the point of it, OSCAR was just better.
Maybe I'm just confused. A few years ago, I made an AIM client...all I really remember is that it used OSCAR and TIC/TOC. They have the greatest names for protocols. Also, AOL, unlike Miribilas (or whatever makes ICQ now), never shut down people who hosted information about their protocols. Man, ICQ was pretty confusing...UDP is lame ![]() |
