Can we?
Since the students in the team are allowed to return the balls to the playing field, is there a penelty if a ball happens to land in a goal?

There's no penalty.
Rather, if a human player in an alliance station throws a ball (deliberately or not) into a goal, that ball will be counted for points at the end of a match as though it was placed there by a robot. Anthony. |

This was done just about every match last year, actually. A robot would push the nearest goal up against the glass and the human players would fill it up. I don't remember seeing any bots with baskets last year.
