I think NASA tweaks the rules each year. However, the two years that we received nasa funding (2001, 2002) we received the same amounts. There were some differences in what we could use the grant for (travel, supplies, etc) and how we got reimbursed. But, these changes were global changes, not specific to a year two team.

We didn't have to mentor anyone for our second year NASA grant but that was in 2002.

from http://robots.larc.nasa.gov/interest.html:

Teams that received NASA funding in a previous year and are applying for second year funding must also:

-Complete and submit a Chairman's award submission to at least one FIRST regional competition, providing a duplicate copy of the Chairman's Award submission to NASA

-Demonstrate existing corporate sponsorship of at least $6000

-Provide evidence that your team is actively mentoring or willing to mentor a rookie FIRST team during the 2002-2003 season

These were last year's guidelines, and there are no guarantees that the conditions will be the same next year.

Well, if there is no rookie team near you, start one in the town next door. Figuratively speaking, at any rate.
If you can't get a high school team started in that town,
get a lego FIRST team put together. They will want to
become a first team when they can't do lego anymore.

become a distance/digital mentor

BB-

One easy thing you can do is register your team as a mentor for the FIRST Ineractive Rural SupporT network. Here you can offer help to all existing and new rural teams. You can find out the specifics in this thread

http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...threadid=19362

and by visiting the rural support website at www.cybersonics.org (rural support link) ... pay special attention to the "join us" page

As a rural support member you also have greater access to all of our member support mechanisms.

We too are a NASA team. Basically to meet the requirements you have to make every effort you can to help other FIRST teams.

NASA Sponsorships for FIRST Robotics

Once again, NASA will be providing sponsorships to assist teams in developing self-sustaining FIRST programs in their local areas. These sponsorships cover the cost of one regional event registration ($5,000) and $1,000 for travel and materials. These sponsorships are targeted at new FIRST teams that need assistance in getting their program started within their local community. More information will be available in the coming weeks. Some important dates are listed below, along with the FIRST regional events that the NASA sponsorships will be applied to in 2004.

FIRST registration and NASA sponsorship applications open: September 29th, 2003
NASA sponsorship application deadline: November 7, 2003
NASA sponsorship announcement: November 19, 2003
The following events will be providing NASA sponsorships for the 2004 FIRST season:

Annapolis, MD
Atlanta, GA
Cleveland, OH
Denver, CO
Los Angeles, CA
Portland, OR
St. Louis, MO

Posted on robotics.nasa.gov, hope this helps

I believe applications come out later. I don't think they are available until Sept. 29th.
