FIRST Jeopardy! (11/16)

Let's start with a quick recap. Pat Fairbank is in the lead with 1500, second is Andrew Rudolph with 800, and pulling up third with 600 is Big Mike (yes, Big Mike actually has some points).

Anyhow, check back around 21:00 EST.

For 400 in wrestling, the NWA came into being in 1929 (back when the fights were still real), but the championship title lineage dates back to 1904 when this man became recognized as the champion in North America. And a bonus 100, after losing it in 1908, this was the number of times he regained the title.

Who is Sam Langford?

Oh, wrestling, not boxing.

So my wrestling person from early 20th century could only be Geroge Mehnert.

Who is George Hackenschmidt?

Bonus:

What is none?

George Hackenschmidt (European Champion) fought the American Champion, Frank Gotch in 1904. At that time there was no World Champion. The winner of the match, which was Hackenschmidt became the first World Heavyweight Champion:

D.J. is right. Well, except for the part about Frank Gotch being the American champ Hackenschmidt beat. That was Tom Jenkins. Frank Gotch won it after Hackenschmidt refused to return to the ring during their match in 1908. Gotch retired in 1913, still holding the title. It was vacated, and about a year later, Charlie Cutler laid claim to the world title. He lost it in his first defense. Those three would never hold the title again. Let me remind you that at this time, the fights were still real.

So in conclusion, the first NWA world champ would be George Hackenschmidt, and after he lost it in 1908, he'd never hold it again. That'd be 500 points for D.J.
