major issues with the background checks

I have major issues with the way that the background checks are being processed-
I as a team leader feel very uncomfortable taking the infomation and putting it in the computer and then reading the results and figuring out what to do with that infomration if it comes back with red flags-

I find this to a forced upon violation of personl privacy and information-perpetrated by me (with no choice or other course of recourse)

if this is to be done then FIRST need to contract a outside agency to collect the information and process it- not the team leaders-
this pus all of us in a very uncomfortable position by asking perople who take time out of thier lives to help the students and tell them that I am going to be privy to thier personal information (esp in this day and age of identity theft) and runa background check to see if they are deemed suitible to work with the students

Re: major issues with the background checks

I agree it puts some of us in an awkward situation

but I would rather do this than to have to deal with a parent calling me, or the school, and saying that a mentor had acted in an inappropriate manner with one of the students. That would be far more difficult (unpleasant) to deal with.

personally I think if someone has a record that will show up in a background check, then they know its going to show up, and 99.9% of the time they will decline to be a mentor. I think that is the real point of these background checks being required - anyone who has a history that is not appropriate for a mentor will know it will be exposed, and that in itself will keep them off the team.
