Re: how are those prototypes coming?

Oh you'd love to see my teams prototype but I don't have the pictures. To prototype the needed dimension to 8 wheels step climber, 6 powered, one of the other mentor used a half scale wooden one-dimensional model that had an adjustable wheel base and height. He used it on a half-scale step to plot how much each wheel has to pull the robot up. We determine the easiest path was the curve that was the flatest and smoothest (ramp-like). It was fun to watch, hopeful a full multi-dimension model will perform as well.

Re: how are those prototypes coming?

I love prototypes. I like looking back at the end of the season at the ones i built at the very beginning and kicking myself for having such dumb ideas.

Re: how are those prototypes coming?

We actually have not broken out the cardboard and hot glue yet and I don't know if we will be. We did everything in Inventor and are ready to order parts and laser cut and machine some metal like right now. Tomorrow morning, we are budgeting cost and weight and we'll be ready to go! I don't know if we will be seeing the cardboard at all this season. We are getting to know Inventor so well, that we turn to it for all our design.

Re: how are those prototypes coming?

Oh I bet you'd love to see our prototype wouldn't you? But, like every other team, I think it's best to unveil your designs at the competition, so you can wow people. I think we've decided on a protoype for the drive train, now other things must come, muahahah.

over the summer

We prototyped our drivetrain over the summer. we still haven't finished designing our mechanisms. I don't have pics but it is basically a two speed tranny with the drills and CIM's and 6 wheels. We probably wont protoype our mechanism before we start builing it.

Re: how are those prototypes coming?

Being an engineering class, we have been working on a better design for last years challange, the ramp was a problem for us because we did not count on the front end swinging down due to weight balance. We have like 5 different fully functional prototypes, all can climb stairs and can be retrofit with a lifting or throwing arm for what we decide to do, hang or ball. I cant get pics, ther team capt would kill me, but i assure you, this year will definetly have some interesting designs in it. We also discovered that lego modeling was the best way to develope new ideas, rather than make a poor working model

Re: how are those prototypes coming?

We have a bunch of wood screwed together, does that count as a prototype? This was actually the earliest we've ever been able to get a "rolling chassis." Also, for future reference, make sure your prototypers actually have the plans to what theyre working on, it saves time in the long run *sigh*.

Re: how are those prototypes coming?

Prototype???

LoL....I remember, last year, our rookie year, we spent four weeks building the prototype...and when it came to the actual building...
4 hours before shipment..our robot was overweight

Ahh well, since I joined a different team (our school has 2 teams)
A girls' and a boys'
It's not a good idea....but I do not think we will be building a prototype...
Maybe....just a rough design

Straight on the real thing....although opinions are subject to change

Re: how are those prototypes coming?

We decided not to do prototyping this year. Last year we spent 5 weeks prototyping and ended up redesigning the entire robot the day before shipment. This year we all agreed on what we think is a solid design and drew everything up in Inventor. Hopefully we will not have any problems but you know, its a robot.
