Can you tell us if the Bosch Motors are connected directly to the wheel without the use of a transmission or anything else? Also we would like to know if the Bosch Motors are equipped with variable speeds or is it just all or nothing. Thank you very much.

Jesse, It sounds to me that your team needs an engineering mentor who at least has some basic knowledge of drive trains. I will give you some quick advice, but your team needs to thoroughly understand this so you will be prepared to deal with it at competitions.

The Bosch drill motors, by themselves run at extremely high speed and with very low torque. This means that you must use a transmission / gearbox of some type to convert your power to a more useful state. Luckily, FIRST provides a drill transmission that you can use.

Do as much research as you can on the FIRST website where rookie workshops are archived. Also, look in the these CD papers area (menu item in orange band above) to look for drive train basics in some white papers.

Here's the easiest way to make a drivetrain using the Bosch motors:

- Use the drill gear boxes provided in the kit set to LOW gear.
- Use the motor mounts and couplers provided in the kit.
- Order two 6 inch wheels from skyway, and two casters.
- hook the output of the drill gearbox (in low gear, remember), directly to the 6 inch wheels (no need for more gears or chain). Be sure to support both sides of the wheels with bearings.
- Use the casters on the other end of the robot.

This setup will give you about 9 ft/s of speed. It won't be the best drivetrain in the world, but you can compete with it. If you want to be slower, use smaller wheels. I wouldn't go much faster, especially if you're using casters - it will be very hard to control.

The key here is that you can direct drive a wheel from the drill gearbox and be at a reasonable speed, but only in low gear. This will eliminate some complexity.

thanx for the help. i just wish that it was FIRST telling rookies this, and that they wouldnt put the pressure on kind veterans..... but thatnx for the help
