# of solenoids
The competition manual is kind of ambiguous in this area. Is there any limit to the number of soledoids that you can use on your robot?
The part use flowchart says that you can use any pneumatic compnent from any year's kit of parts, but is also says that you cannot use a motor, pump, solenoid, or actuator that was not included in the kit of parts. Can anyone clarify? Thanks |

the pneumatic solonoids are really valves that happen to contain a solonoid.
the way i understand it we are allowed to use the same type of valvess they gave us this year, as many as you need to control the cylinders on your bot since you can have an unlimited number of cylinders, it wouldnt make sense to only let you use the quantitiy of 3 valves they supplied in the kit. |

According to the current rule book, you can have unlimited pneumatic cylinders and solenoids. The details for pneumatics are in the FIRST rule book and pneumatic book.

You are right that it is ambiguous. <R54> says you may use them if they are off the shelf. However, the parts use flow chart says you can't. This is a question that you must ask FIRST.

It looks like off the shelf solenoid valves are ok. You do however, have a limited number of digital outputs...
Q: R54 states there is no limit to number of solenoid valves. They must be off the shelf. The flow chart seems to contradict this. May we purchase other off the shelf solenoid valves? A: You may purchase other off the shelf solenoid valves. We will modify the flow chart accordingly. Q: What are the total number of cylinders that can be used on the robot? A: <R54> clearly states "There is no limit to the number of solenoid valves, air cylinders and fittngs you may use on your robot." Q: In 5.2.9 It is stated that There is no limit to the number of solenoid valves, etc you may use on your robot. The part use flowchart would seem to only allow solenoids from last year's kit. May we obtain other solenoids to use? A: You may obtain other solenoid valves. Be sure to verify that their coils are specified to operate at 12 Vdc. |
