The Importance of Sound

We need some more animation discussion here... come on, animators!

Just a quick poll, where would you rank the importance of quality a quality soundtrack in the creation of a good animation? As far as I see it, there are three major parts: Story/Concept, Video, and Audio. Last year, we had a mediocre story, awesome video, and no audio (deadlines killed it).. This year, we have a pretty awesome concept, pretty darn good video, and really awesome sound. Personally, I think that audio can be just as important as the other two in a good animation. If you took away the sound we have this year, you're left with a pretty weak package.

I guess what I'm getting at is that if you have somebody you can get on the task, now would be a good time to get started on your sound, if you haven't already. It could make or break your whole project.

Without a doubt, sound is important. Without it, you only use one sense taking in all the information. With sound, you can convey additional thought and information, as well as have two senses take in the message, with I'm pretty sure does something with brain chemistry.

That mean you wanna help me, Albrot? I had an assistant who was supposed to do nothing but write one MAXscript, get sound clips, and be ready to help with post production. Seeing as he did none of it, I'm rather SOL for sound at the moment. Hmm... anybody know how the oddball sound integration using gismos and helpers actually works? I have a feeling I'm going to end up relying on it...

I'd love to be able to figure out how the in-max sound system works, that's one of the things the manual doesn't do a good job of covering, and I've never done any sound work before. It doesn't help that I only have access to anything freeware for sound editing and don't have much time to finish the thing before we submit. [beg]Anything anybody knows would be greatly appreciated.[/beg]

Cool

I do a lot of the sound work for my team so if you want me to help a little bit I could. I usually use Sonic Foundry Sound Forge for editing sound in terms of scratches pops etc. then if there is a need for overlapping sound, say birds chirping while someone talks to another person, I use Sonic Foundry Acid Pro.
