NEW Scholarship Available

after what seems like years RIT has finally decided to give out FIRST Scholarships.

*note this is not on the FIRST webpage yet, so you heard it here first...so now come to RIT. We have a regional, Scholarships, Teams, College club, and many ways to get involved. This will be added to the Scholarship page on usfirst.org soon

here is the info

AMOUNT
$5,000 per academic year. Renewable on an annual basis if the recipient maintains a cumulative RIT grade point average of 2.8 or higher each year. May not be combined with other RIT merit scholarships, but may be awarded along with need-based scholarships, grants, loans, or employment as part of a comprehensive financial aid award.

WHERE TO APPLY
Download scholarship application at www.usfirst.org and submit application to RIT's Undergraduate Admissions Office by February 1. Must also submit RIT's application for admission by February 1. Scholarship application requires a letter of recommendation from an adult leader of the student's FIRST team describing the contributions the student has made towards the success of their team.

About time! I'm really glad to see RIT not just sponsor this regional, and offer mentors to rookies but jump full on the bandwagon. I'm sure RIT scholarships is another selling point to get schools locally to get involved.

Whoever initiated this, thank you.

If only I lived close enough to RIT to consider going there

The only schools in the eastern part of the US I'm applying to are Johns Hopkins, MIT, and Washington University in St. Louis .. I guess I have more of a focus on medicine (Hopkins and Wash. U) than on engineering =\ Maybe I'll end up doing biomed engineering!

But yeah. Darn. =\

FIT gives out full tuition scholarships ($40,000) - and I think all you have to do is apply as a participant on a FIRST team; they don't have a limit on how many. One of our seniors got one 2 years ago. Here's the info from last year

http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/2004...cription04.pdf

According to the FIRST scholarship site http://www.usfirst.org/robotics/scholsh.htm they will post info on 2005 scholarships by September 30.

Well, you live 25 miles closer to RIT then I did when I applied. I also have a friend from Hawaii who goes here. (This isn't really directed to you, because you are applying to other east coast schools, but more for other people on the west coast that may be making the same decision).

RIT has a new option in the Electrical Engineering department in biomedical. Thus, if you ever decide you don't like biomed, or the market doesn't grow as quickly as expected, you have a full EE degree and aren't stuck with a niche degree.

Re: NEW Scholarship Available

Whoa!

This is great news.
All you FIRST Juniors and Seniors out there should DEFINITELY give RIT a close look, even if you weren't before. Remember, a school doesn't necessarilly need to be in your backyard to be a perfect match for you.

Maybe RIT is really where you want to go, and you just don't know it yet!

Take a look.
Rochester is where it's at.

John

Re: NEW Scholarship Available

Its a great thing to have more FIRST-based scholarships. If only they had admissions to Ivy leagues and pre-eminet engineering colleges on the basis of FIRST.

As much as I would love (and I'm being serious) to go to Rochester Insititute of Technology, Purdue is by far the more economical alternative. Sorry.
