Changing Dimensions of Virtual parts in Autodesk Inventor 8

I am trying to change the dimensions of the bumper piece of the chassis from the virtual kit of parts. I can not figure out how to change its length from 38 inches to 28 inches. Any help would be appreciated.....

Thanks, Dan.

Re: Changing Dimensions of Virtual parts in Autodesk Inventor 8

I haven't looked at that specific file in inventor, but I know how to change dimensions-

-go into sketch mode
-at this point you can either A) redraw that part of it to the right size, or if possible, B)
-click "general dimension" and then select the length that you want to change
-a little box with the dimension (38") should pop up, type in the new dimension (28")
-click ok or enter or whatever it is
-the length should be changed

*note* this might not work if other parts of the drawing are dependent on that dimension.. it will tell you its overcontrained then. I can't help you much if that happens, you probably will have to redo some stuff

I hope this helps you some!! hopefully someone else will notice and correct me if I missed a step

Eh... it doesn't quite work that way, I tried that myself and I was having one hell of a time figuring it out. It works like this.

1. open up the bumper (or transmisison support bracket or whatever you want to extend or retract)

2. Right click on Base1 under filename.ipt and select Edit Solid
This is where you can extend or contract the part.

3. Select Extend or contract body and chose the plane you want to expand or contract it on ie. the end face of the part

4. Enter the distance, to achieve the correct size for the bumper select 20 (yeah its weird) then hit ok.

5. Measure the length using the measure tool just to check, then hit return and save it as a new file.

There you have it. You can do the same for the pistons but you need to do it to several of the components.

Re: Changing Dimensions of Virtual parts in Autodesk Inventor 8

The reason this is probably happening for you is because you are working with STEP or IGES parts rather than native Inventor parts. STEP/IGES files will work, they just don't integrate as well and are harder to modify. The drivetrain parts are available here from Innovation First as Inventor Parts (IPT) and Assemblies (IAM). More kit parts are also available via Streamline.

Just a guess...
