Non Engineers with FIRST?

How many students work with FIRST who do not have a desire to be engineers? I want to study Marine Biology but have found myself stuck with FIRST. Are there more people in this situation?

im actually dead in between going into engineering and something more liberal arts/social science type thing
but before first there was no way i would ever have even considered being an engineer...which i guess goes to show that first is succeeding in its goal

I personally am not going into engineering. I'm going into medicine. What career is yet to be determined..all of you who know me know why I say that..lol I like engineering and all and it's my second choice, but, at least for now, medicine is first choice.

~Angela who may someday be trusted with saving people's lives..scary..

Side note: Angela, you can go into medical engineering...just look at Cori Lathan (shameless plug: www.robot-chicks-union.org or www.rcuweb.org, either work, as far as I know)

Anyway, I dont know if Dean planned it this way...but he seems to have sparked careers in general, not just careers in engineering/science/technology.

Im going to college for International Business Administration (lol, yes, I know...such a long major, such a short girl )...and I blame it on being a part of a business this year......buying, purchasing, presenting, having meetings, research & development, testing, strategy, competition, etc. That business is called being on a FIRST team. We all do it, but dont realise it. So, in a way, when I am given $3000 at Babson in the 2nd semester to start a business with 19 other students...I feel rather prepared & almost, to say, ahead of the game.

So why does FIRST only give out engineering scholarships?!? Grrrrr....soon, hopefully, that will all change.

PS - All our profits for the business, as well, have to go to a local charity....Boston area teams take notice...but make sure youre a certified tax-exempt non-profit

side note

http://www.rcuweb.org is the correct address for the Robot Chicks Union. the other address still leads to the old site and has the ugly banner.

relief

I often find myself getting involved with things that are barely related to what I want to do. I'm glad to know that other people are streching FIRST the same way I am.

I was going to be a science teacher, then I joined robotics. I actually had no interest in being in engineering until robotics. I am an engineering major, and I was thinking about doubling in sociology.

Talking That's Me!!!

I spent all four years of high school involved with Bobcat Robotics, but I never planned on going into engineering--- In fact, I just finished my first year as a communications major at Boston University.

I still got a TON out of my experience with the team. I had the chance to try video/PR/administration/strategy/driving/a little bit of everything.

WHen UTC began sponsoring the New England Regional in '99, I worked at the event doing media relations, and that summer through the contacts I made I was able to get a job at their corporate headquarters in the communications department, where I still work when I'm back from school. Sometimes I even get to work on planning for FIRST-- does it get any better than that?

Kirsten

I don't really think so. Unless you have to be inside and dressed up all day.

I got lucky. The president of SBPLI (the sponsor for the Long Island Regional) happens to like me, and loves the fact that FIRST changed my career choices. He loved it so much, that he has me speak to businesses when he's trying to raise the money for a regional. Last January, I went to a 2 hours business breakfast, made a speech, and got paid $100. I definitely don't mind making money that way.
