CIM motor issue

We are using the KOP transmissions w/sprockets and 2 CIM's on each side with treads (belts). We have encountered a situation with the drive system (specifically the motors) that is bugging the heck out of us. When applying "low" current to the motors they produce an annoying "whinning" or "vibrating" noise . It typically lasts less than a second or so and once more current is applied and the robot begins to move (not sure of actuall speed threshhold) the noise stops.

Our thinking is that at the low current the motors are not generating enough torque hence the noise. The problem is we don't have the expertise to determine the actual cause and/or fix.

Any help, insight, or suggestions from you motor "gurus" is much appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Re: CIM motor issue

That is not a problem. All electric motors I have seen make some sorta noise when stalling. (I think they make the same noise at all times, but it is usually covered up by the sound of all the rotating parts.) Some people on my team also seem to be afraid of it thinking something is wrong, but as long as you don't have too much voltage (and consequently current) going through the motor at stall, it is safe.

Yes, this happens with all electric motors. If you want to prove it to your teammates, take a drill and lightly hold down the trigger of it for a few seconds, you should be able to show them that the drill makes a slight "humming" sound, same as the CIMs.

Oh man, you should hear our FP gearbox at full speed. The thing would instantly alleviate any concerns you had for your CIMS!

Our robot sounds like a monster, with the CIMS making a harsh vibration near stall, the arm gearbox screeching like a falcon at max RPMs, and our loose, heavily vibrating compressor soaking up enough air to fill our two-foot long cylinder. The thing's absolutely amazing!
