The tetra's running away... Ahhhhh....

It's a robotic tetra. I searched for tetra on google and what did I happen to find but a picture of a robot tetra. What is unique about this tetra is that it was produced from a code. The moving robots including a tetra

This is actually a really neat research project. I saw a show on it a few months ago, possibly on NASA TV. The first iteration of creatures was put into a virtual ocean and the best "swimmers" evolved. Then, they put the swimmers on land and at first they just flopped around, but later new creatures better suited for walking developed.

All this was done with only minimal direction...the only criteria were that the best swimmers/walkers were the ones that survived to be further adapted. Virtual evolution.

One interesting "walker" showed one of the differences between virtual and actual evolution. It was merely a very large stick that just fell over itself a few times. The computer program recognized this as a successful walker because of its average speed and it survived the evolution process.

Heheh.... While we are on the topic of artificial evolution there is an article in a recent Discover Magazine about a program called Avida. It is probably the closest thing that anyone could get to actual evolution. Even the creator himself was amazed at what the program created. Of course now we will probably have to content with evolving viruses.
