Wireless Networks: Connecting buildings together
I need a little help here. Whats the best way to connect 2 buildings around 600 ft apart? I currently have a Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router.
Option A: Figure out which antena port on my router to use and plug in a Directional Antena to the building. Option B: Setup a Linux box with router app (I'm sure I could find one) and use a desktop card..but remove the antena and connect a directional one. Foreseeable problems with A: I think I'd lose my local wireless if i removed an antena and shot the signal to another building. Foreseeable problems with B: Aquiring a linux box and the software to use. General probelm: Would I need a directional antena at the other building to shoot the signal back to my house so they can communicate? Any help is appreciated. |

2) You don't have to unless you need to have the signal go across 10 miles of air. The easiest way to test this is by building one from a pringles can: http://www.oreillynet.com/cs/weblog/view/wlg/448 (basic howto) http://www.netscum.com/~clapp/wireless.html (more detail, data, etc.) Now, this all comes with a nice little warning about breaking FCC regulations, as seen here: http://www.access.gpo.gov/nara/cfr/w...7cfr15_00.html But if you're beyond that, then it's all good! (P.S. Unless you want to retain your eyesight, I don't suggest staring down one of these tubes while in operation. The firing electrons and the 2.4GHz connection [which just so happens to be the resonance frequency of water {microwave}] can hurt a bit.) |
