Top 1,000 schools in the country.
This Newsweek article list the top 1,000 schools in the USA.
I wonder how many of those schools are involved with FIRST? Wilson Magnet is #27. |

Re: Top 1,000 schools in the country.
Well, Dutch Fork High School (one of the schools of 1293) is #563. My alma mater (Irmo) and Chapin, the third member of our team, is not on the list.

Re: Top 1,000 schools in the country.
My current high school is ranked in 796th place and my old high school that I attended my freshmen and sophomore year is ranked 806th. And both of these high schools make up the majority of our team, because we are a multi school team.

Re: Top 1,000 schools in the country.
We are 439, but if i'm right number 13 is Coral Reef, if i'm not mistaken isn't that the home of 233?
Well anyway i've got some beef with this, if you didn't know and just looked up your school, they simply just took the Number of AP tests given at your school and divided that by the number of graduating seniors. What kind of ranking system is that? They didn't even take in to consideration SATs, ACTs, College Placement, Cost per Student, and stuff like that. They didn't even label if the school was Public or Private. Oh but wait i haven't even gotten to my good point yet, they didn't even count some of the more famous schools in the Nation that are, in fact Public, schools like Stuyvesant in New York (home of 694) or Thomas Jefferson in Va or the Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy in Ill. or Lowell High in San Francisco so you may be in the top 100, but not really the top 100 in the nation. The reason they gave why those schools weren't on the list? They were too selective, the schools that are on the top of the list, guess what! they are mostly selective public schools! Well anyway its a cool stat, but its Totally Mislabeled. |

Re: Top 1,000 schools in the country.
Ithaca high school is ranked #310 according to Newsweek's formula: "the number of Advanced Placement or International Baccalaureate tests taken by all students at a school in 2004 divided by the number of graduating seniors", which is pretty lame
Does it take into account the scores achieved? I can see how to easily inflate a school's score by just having more people take tests. The Wall Street Journal attempted to rank high schools too last year based on acceptance into top universities (Ivy Leagues & places like MIT/Stanford). Ithaca ranked 4th* in that and the top 3 were private schools so we felt like first in terms of public schools. I find this measure to be a more accurate measure of a schoo's ability to educate its students and how well those students' abilities reflect that. But it's still not close to perfect. *Edit: This measurement sucks too. The reason we're that high is the fact that Cornell University IS Ithaca. The relationship between Ithaca High School and CU is very good and 60+ seniors are accepted there per year (out of 350). So that kinda inflates our standing for Ivy Leagues.
