Programming software?

I have been on the mechanical side of my team this past year, but our programmers are leaving us. So I offered to learn how to program our robot for the upcomming season. Unfortunatly I don't know where to start. I was told that there is some programming software that I need to download (I have a mac) but I don't know where to get it. Any help that anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much

Hi,
You can get information on programming at www.ifirobotics.com. I don't know if there is stuff compatible with MACs but I am sure you can get h old of a Windows OS. We use the MPLABS software with a compiler you should have gotten with this years Kit. If you cannot find it, you can order it at the site mentioned above. Regarding learning programming, generous students have taken the time to write some tutorials. They can be found in the programming section of the White Papers.
Additionally, if you need more help feel free to contact me via IM/Private Messaging.

Is there a chance you'd be able to talk to your old programmers, to get the software and some advice from them?

If that's not an option, you could always work on learning C without MPLAB. You don't need that particular program to work with C for FIRST, even though it'd make it easier to learn than to start with something else and switch back.

Kevin Watson's page could be of some help too.

Re: Programming software?

I learned basic C programming from the tutorial on howstuffworks.com, its surprisingly informative and gives you pretty much all the training you need to do pretty much all the programming you'll need to do for the robot.
Here's the link.
