I was looking thru the AIM website late one night and found a link to aim remote i found it very cool and thought to myself <thought>Wow this would be really cool on my newely created myspace</thought> so i filled out all the forms and tested all the links in the orignal page that AIM tells you to test the links and they all worked fine. When i put it in my myspace i left it there for a day or so then decided to test the links for the heck of it and they did not work.
I found the problem and it was the link to the AIM program prompting the link was changed from "AIM:goim?screenname=silverbullet8338(etc)" to when i mouse over the link it sends me to the page "http://myspace.com/...goim?screenname=silverbullet8338(etc)" or "http://editprofile.myspace.com/...goim?screenname=silverbullet8338(etc)" if i am in the profile preview page. I tested the aim remote in my livejournal since i thought it might contain some trach of java script but it works in my Livejournal. could anybody why the myspace domain is apphended to the begining of the link? Thanks Bill Hancock My MySpace if you wanted to look at the page And my LiveJournal where it does work |

Re: AIM remote in a myspace
you should probably put the remote in the profile page instead or a journal entry because it will eventually disappear as you make more entries.

You mean in the LiveJournal? I just put it there to test if there was an trace of java script in the AIM remote code. I dont really care if it stays up in my LJ or not. |

Re: AIM remote in a myspace
Alright everyone, I've tried everything. Trying to post links to the aim: protocol in MySpace is impossible. So I thought about it for a moment. Why do we really have to link directly to the aim: protocol? Couldn't you just send the request through an intermediary page? The answer: yes. Armed with this knowledge, I wrote up a little script that did just that, except when I looked at it, users probably wouldn't want to manually write the extra links out. I needed a generator.
Here it is, the AIM Remote Generator that works for MySpace: http://podcast.openfirst.org/xim-gen.php Enjoy everyone! |

Re: AIM remote in a myspace
Yea, intermediary pages are a good way to bypass limits in things. I wrote a quicksearch function that refused to do anything but a GET, when really I just wanted it to fill in part of a URL. An intermediary page took the get and plugged it into the URL.

Re: AIM remote in a myspace
Well, as far as I can see,
And what I can come up with is.. Myspace site cannot understand the command aim: and so it replaces the code with .. Which then makes the code ..goim?screenname=[insert screenname here] Instead of.. aim:goim?screenname=[insert screenname here] And then to make it a hyperlink. because .. is not like http:// or www. or anything it adds the myspace link to the front to try and make it right. And if you try to fix the code, it goes and changes it... so, I would say talk to Tom. lol. So I think it is a myspace issue. But I really dont know. |

Re: AIM remote in a myspace
I think that's something that they've blocked, as I've seen them use ".." before. The most likely reason I can see for them blocking it is because of abuse by some people using it to spam others.
[edit: I think I've found a way around it... read my next post] Last edited by Adam Richards : 25-11-2005 at 12:12. |
