5,000 miles later...

this has been our best season yet and we want to make it as long as possible. so far this year, we have traveled close to 5,000 miles for robotics.

2,200 miles to Nationals (flying)

400 miles to Battle Cry (driving)

600 miles to Ralley in the Valley (driving)

500 miles to Mayhem on the Merrimac (driving)

760 miles to the Virginia Regional (driving)

10 miles to the Long Island Regional (driving)

220 miles to the New Haven Regional (driving)

I know that only adds up to 4,690, but that's not including the kickoff and all those wrong turns we made... and we're not done yet!

Thats pretty cool! Appx. 3798 driving miles will be accumulated by team 84 at the end of our competition season. Not including Kick-off, traveling while at the competitions, or the getting lost part!

If I get a team going we have an unfair advantage in having the most miles next year. We'll be coming from Germany for everything that's happening. Or better, we'll have to come from Germany for everything. IT ill be difficult to find sponsors that have the kind of money we need. It's gonna be quite expensive to get 20 members or so over for regionals, possible nats etc...

Lightweights, except for Phil if he gets a team going

We went more than 5,000 just getting to Nationals. Add 800 round trip to San Jose and 4,400 to IRI. I'm not going to add the Chatsworth scrimmage, LA regional or the Summer Classic just because they are down in the noise (about 100 miles total). If they have another Fall cometition up in San Jose we're planning on going to that (another 800 miles).

Last summer we were invited by Team 22, HOMER, to help them put on a demo for FIRST at the Paris Airshow, along with Team 362 the Muses.

Then there are the Hawiian teams that have to go 3,000 miles each way to get to the West Coast regionals and then an additional 3000 each way to go to Nationals.

Oh and we don't get lost either, we get maps beforehand and know how to use them.

By West Coast standards we are by no means an exceptionally well travelled team. I'm amazed at people who think driving two hours is a long way. Here it's two hours to get across town, or two hours to the next town and sometimes both.

They are all lightweights, even Phil's potential team from Germany. The honor of "most travelled FIRST team" has to go to the Brazilians (Team 383). Porto Alegre to Seattle and back for the Pacific Northwest regional, then Porto Alegre to Orlando and back for the Nationals. That record is going to be very hard to beat!

yea, i knew the teams from the northwest and canada flew alot to get to nationals, but i don't think anyone drove as much as we did. we drove 2500 miles so far, plus we are planning on attending bash at the beach, the competition in maryland and maybe even river rage... we have driven from 12:30am to 7am to get to ralley in the valley in the rain and snow. we left at 3am to get to mayhem and battle cry. i pretty much memorized the entire highway system of the northeast!

. If you need a single longest trip on the highway, I give you Team 781, the Kinetic Knights, from Kincardine, Ontario (on L. Huron, just below the base of the (Bruce) peninsula separating Georgian Bay from Lake Huron). As Canadian Regional Champions, they travelled by bus from home to the Finals, and back. And with a piper, in a kilt, too!

. According to my 1998 Rand McNally map program, that distance, one way, is 2175 mi (to downtown Orlando, so add a few more miles to get to Rodentville). What endurance !

. Way to go, Knights ! They build 'em strong in the Bruce :-)

now that's far. last year we took a bus back from nationals because we didn't have the money to fly home. we just threw the robot in one of the lower storage compartments, that saved a lot of money too. we were on that bus for 22 hours or something like that. this year we had to fly back because we had school on monday and we already missed a couple of days for the regionals.

We flew approximately 25000 miles this season. Man it was expensive. Man we enjoyed it.

My point was that the BeachBots, a team that has an "average" amount of traveling for a West Coast Team, easily doubled 5000 miles. We did fly a good bit of the way, but with the number of people and the distances involved it was cheaper to fly. We did the math and $0.08 per passenger mile is hard to beat, especially when you consider food and lodging in-transit. It helps that our nearest airport, LAX, is a major hub.

I can't speak for other team's mileage, but I know that the Arizona teams drive many hours to get to LA and San Jose. I didn't even mention them in my earlier post, but we are looking forward to returning the favor next year at the Arizona regional.
