Awards At Championships

I've been thinking, and an interesting thing has presented itself to me. Statistically, I have never seen a team win an award that was not at Nationals. For example, the Animation, and the Inventor award. Instead, it seems that the teams whose robots are not present get an "honorable mention," and the runner-up gets the actual award.

And as I am one person, I have to check myself. So I ask the community: Has there ever been a team that has won one of the major awards whose robot was not present?

Re: Awards At Championships

Define major.

All of the technical awards are judged on site. Obviously teams awarded the spirit and sportsmanship awards must be there as well. Chairman's teams get a ticket to nationals. Winners and Finalists are obviously there.

I think Autodesk is the only award where a team doesn't HAVE to attend the event to be considered.

Re: Awards At Championships

I meant awards that do not require a team's robot to be present and competing. So that would leave the two Autodesk awards.

Re: Awards At Championships

In 2005 the Website Award was given to Team 1540 (Catlin Gabel School). They were not present at the Championships, and received the award later.

Re: Awards At Championships

All awards that aren't pre-judged are given to teams that attend Champs because the judges judge the teams there! It's based upon division, with each division sending in one "nomination" to the pool, then out of those four, a winner is chosen. As you can tell, this doesn't apply for all, as MOE didn't win Engineering Inspiration, but won it at Champs because the judges decided they deserved it.
