Inventor help

Please only respond if you have an idea that wasn't mentioned, or if you have a helpful link.

Well the problem started after i installed windows SP1 and 2. Every time i try to do ANYTHING in inventor it crashes. I think it's having a problem seeing the license which causes it to crash. I've tried un-installing it, reinstalling it, downloading updates, deleting the license from the registry, un-installing SP1 and 2, and doing a system restore to an earlier time, nothing has worked. If no one can come up with any solutions i think I'll just have to reload the OS.

thanks in advance to anyone who helps out.

Re: Inventor help

First question: are you running a multiple user system, and using inventor from a non admin used? (I had that problem)

Second question: is your graphics card supported? (this can be found out at the autodesk site)

Re: Inventor help

Did you try installing it after you installed sp2? If it was the license then it probably wouldn't even start. You might have to clean your registry(be careful).

Mine crashes to desktop after it does a couple frames of heavy rendering when I am trying to render an animation.

Try CCleaner when you don't have Inventor installed. I haven't had any problems with it but be careful with the registry. You might as well try this before you reistall.

First backup everything important on the comp before you do anything.

What errors does it give you?

Re: Inventor help

It gave me a bunch of registry reading errors when i installed it again, so i went through the registry to look, and for some reason those files had restricted access, so i changed it and the installation worked. but it still wont load and it gives me an error "the instruction at '0x01229db4' referenced memory at '0x012a39e8'. the memory could not be 'read'". think a disk defrag might work?

No. Defragmenting will not restore damaged data; it will merely re-arrange it on a drive to allow for better access and slightly increase the available free space.

Besides, you're describing an error that occurred in RAM, not on disk. This could be indicative of a memory defect, but that's not too likely unless you're seeing this sort of error in many other programs as well. (Since they share the same RAM, after all.) Absent any physical damage, this sort of error is typically due to a bug or an incompatibility in software, not hardware.

As for Windows XP SP1 and SP2, just leave the service packs installed. You really shouldn't expose an XP RTM (i.e. no service pack) computer to the internet for any appreciable length of time, given the exploits that exist for old vulnerabilities. Look at it this way: if Autodesk products only worked on three-year-old versions of XP, nobody would use Autodesk products.

Also, don't bother with registry hacks or cleaners; unless the utility is written to account for a specific Inventor issue (and, realistically, it's probably not), it's very probably going to do nothing to help, and may well cause damage.

Which version of Inventor are you using? Have you installed the latest service pack for it?

Consider contacting Autodesk.

Re: Inventor help

I'm using inventor 10, and i tried the service packs. nothing worked. And thats what was puzzling me, it was referencing a ram error but i don't get that error with any other program so i assumed it was something else. guess I'll be doing a fresh windows install soon.

Re: Inventor help

Has anybody tried going to the Autodesk website for help. Although their search isn't the gretest, you may find exactly what you are looking for. One of our installs failed in a similar way to your description. It turned out there was an incompatibility with the screen driver.

Re: Inventor help

It's most likely the graphics card, unfortunately according to the autodesk site my video card (nvidia 6200) is only supported in inventor 11. The sad part is that I'm running inventor from my 500 MHz laptop with 192Mb ram and a 16 Mb video card, but can't run it on a 2Ghz, 1GB ram, and a 128 Mb video card computer. So until i guess I'll be buying another Radeon 9550 soon.

Unsupported chipsets seems to be a recurring problem with older copies of Inventor.
