# of Teams in each state

Does anyone know where I can get a list of how many teams in each state. I was wondering who had the most.

Re: # of Teams in each state

It would seem to me that California takes the cake, with 121 teams and an average of 1 team in every 1308 square miles. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: # of Teams in each state

As far as number of teams go, i think California does have the most, but Michigan comes close, with 118 teams (i counted really fast, so i could have messed up) but i think that comes out to a tighter team-area ratio.

Michigan has 109 teams, and 1 team in about every 899 square miles. Thanks for pointing that out!

Re: # of Teams in each state

Based on NJ Facts http://www.skyweb.net/~mgbio/njfacts.htm
our little state has

49 teams this year (down from 53)

making it 1 team per 165.5 sq. miles

and 1 team per 161,304. 6 people

Some counties have teams in every town. The city of Newark has about a half dozen alone.

It is pretty likely that we are the most teams per area (but I would also check Ct. for that)

Its a very close contest between CT and NJ. We've got 33 teams, but only average out to a team per every 168.15 sqmi. However, that is a team per every 103,200 people.

Re: # of Teams in each state

It is great to figure number of teams per square miles or number of people, but that really doesn't matter. The real measure is how many high schools, or better yet, high school students have access to a FIRST team.

In January, Dean Kamen visited Detroit and when he met the Governor he made it clear what is important to him. He said that at that time Michigan had the highest number of teams per schools...One out of every four high schools in Michigan had a FIRST team. I don't know where he found those numbers, but this would be a great statistic to know, and probably the more important one.

Remember that many FIRST teams support multiple high schools. Example, our team represents the Huron Valley School District which has three high schools.

I think Rhode Island is going to take over the lead; they are going to have FIRST in every high school for the 2007/08 Season.

http://www.stac.ri.gov/index.php?section=news&item=21

*Technically, when one says "FIRST teams", it can mean FRC, FVC, FLL, or JFLL. Since Rhode Island is going to have a FVC Team in every high school from the 2007/08 season and onwards, they will be the first state to have FIRST in every high school.

Re: # of Teams in each state

I'm interested in seeing the percent growth in number of teams from year to year... does anyone know where to find this? Because one statistic that sticks in my mind is that Minnesota has gone from 2 teams last year to 17 this year, and I'm just wondering what the overall increase is from year to year

Re: # of Teams in each state

Someone linked earlier to the thread on teams-per-capita.

Using today's data, I've updated the list compiled for the earlier thread in which teams are sorted by TPMR (teams per million residents). I agree that teams per high school is probably a better measure; however, data on number of high schools is harder to get, and team affiliations with multiple schools change somewhat from year to year.

US average is now 4.1 TPMR, and every US state now has at least one FRC team.

There are 1315 FRC teams registered as of today, a 16% increase over last year's total 1133 teams that participated in FRC events. Actual figures for 2007 may differ slightly since fee payment deadlines are still pending. For overall growth in number of FRC teams refer to the 2006 FIRST Annual Report.

Cool! For once Mississippi isn't ranked near the bottom of a list having to do with education! Actually, we are pretty close to the median! Do you by chance still have a list of the number of teams competing by State last year or know where to get it? I would be interested in seeing a list of States ranked by % growth from year to year. For example, last year Mississippi had 6 teams but this year we have grown to 10 with 4 new rookie teams for a 50% growth in one year. Of course, with such a small number of teams to start with any growth looks big but I am wondering if the States with a lot of teams per capita are becoming "saturated" or is growth pretty steady. It would be cool to see this data over the last several years.
