2007 Scouting at Champ Event

Considering that there will be four divisions and a demand to know exactly who is going to Einstein with what capability, should we organize some group of scouts to compile scouting information for all teams to reference to???

Also, considering all of the divisions are larger than a regional, and some of us have some small teams that might be hard pressed to do that caliber of scouting, should we go ahead and do some collaborative scouting in divisions as well??? It would probably just cover the basic stuff such as photography and general stats.

Being less than a month from the thing, I would like some thoughts on this, and if we organize something, awesome.

Thanks

-Joe

Re: 2007 Scouting at Champ Event

Our team runs this database with 7 laptops for every match. We would be more than happy to share our results with any of the teams (just need a laptop, a copy of labview, and an install of our database) to retrieve data. We also take photos of every robot and can burn them to CD.

It can also be viewed in excel, but its much easier to read in the labview format. We may work on an export that provides analyzed data if we get the time.

Re: 2007 Scouting at Champ Event

Joe,

It helps a bunch to split it with a team you have good connections with in your division. In 2005, 573 and 830 did scouting together, and in 2006, 830 and 201 did scouting together. Each team had a certain task list; for example, mine was in charge of last year's photos, half of the pit scouting, and half of the match scouting.

One thing to keep in mind, if you do choose to do collaborative scouting, is that you want the data to be as objective as possible, since each team may have a different idea of what is good versus what is excellent, and so on.

Re: 2007 Scouting at Champ Event

If teams use our database all it would take to share information would be a usb stick. Or if a team has a printer, all the data could be printed out in a readable format. Check out http://www.chiefdelphi.com/forums/sh...ad.php?t=56017 for more info. I assure you that the program is stable. just give it a try =). Oh, and i know some teams set up wireless networks. So it would be easier then a USB stick actually, just simply put the file on the shared files of one computer =).

Re: 2007 Scouting at Champ Event

Team 25 will be running our Scouting Server/Database system on our field at Championships this year. For those of you that saw the 'Team 25 Scouting Pit' last year, it will return this year again with a new and improved software system.
  • we will be looking for people to help us scout
  • since we run 6 scouts at a time, we'd like to rotate out
  • we use a paper based scouting system
  • the information from this system is then entered into our computer database by typists
  • the information is cross checked by our strategy/analysis team
  • the information can be fetched via any web browser
  • *note* whether the system will be available to the public is still up in the air as we are developing security measures to limit access

We are looking for people in our division to help us with paper scouting. Our forms are incredible simple and have a very easy learning curve. If you can spare team members to help us scout, we'd be more than happy to let you have access to the database you contributed to.

Re: 2007 Scouting at Champ Event

Team 537 will be running our MARRS program for our field again this year. We would love to make it accessible to more teams during the event if they are interested. It is a web-based system like many other so teams that use it must have a PHP/MySQL server (XAMPP) to run it. It would be posible to transfer info via USB sticks though. If any teams are interested please email me.

Re: 2007 Scouting at Champ Event

Likewise, Team 768 is going to be running our application at Atlanta. We'll be happy to exchange our match data with any teams that would like it - we can do direct file transfer via USB key as well. (We'll be able to install the app for anyone who wants it, as well, if anyone there hasn't had a chance to download it.)

A thought for next year - perhaps there should be some discussion in the off-season for some standard format (CSV, XML, etc) for interchange to allow the various scouting programs to exchange information. It would especially help in situations such as the Championship Event, or some of the super regionals.

Re: 2007 Scouting at Champ Event

Unfortunately it will be hard to make a standard as we don't know next year's game. I would lean toward an XML format however.

Well, I agree completely in terms of the game-specific data. But it would be easy enough for certain things to be agreed on, such as team-specific information, or for generalized information such as the total scores, penalties, and teams involved on each alliance. Having a base means less to tweak when the game itself is announced in January, as well as a format that might be easily carried over from year to year.

It's something that occurred to me while I've been noticing that so many in this thread have suggested sharing data by USB-key.

Re: 2007 Scouting at Champ Event

Team 1676 will be running their public access scouting server at the championship. Any team wishing to view the data is absolutley welcome to. All that is needed is a webbrowser. Right now we will only be scouting our division but that may change . Our database will definetly be available in the stands but we are currently looking for away to make it available in the pits aswell. To access the server at the event go to http://srv1676

at both events, NJ and Buckeye, at least 30 diffrent teams at each used it at some point or another.
