What would be the best way to go about getting a website?

So... my team needs a website. What would be the best way to get one?

I could use a free website page, but I don't know any. And I think we would pefer to have one without ads, but that would depend on how much it costs.

I've never made a website before, and apparently no one else on my team has either. I have only a limited knowledge of HTML, so any help would be appeciated.

Re: What would be the best way to go about getting a website?

Matt Glennon has FIRST experience (from being on a team and volunteering). He also has a web server and is giving space to teams who want to start a site.

Fill out his interest form here: http://www.usfirsthost.com/interest.php

And as a bonus, no ads! He can also install Frontpage extensions which may be something you would want to use if no one from your team has web design experience.

I can help you design one if you'd like. I did my team's website.

My team can most likely give you hosting if you need it. If 500 mb from usfirsthost.com isn't enough, I imagine we could give you a 1-5 gig of space depending on what you'd do with it.

Send me a PM if you're interested.

Re: What would be the best way to go about getting a website?

If you need tutorials on ANYTHING web design related go to http://www.w3schools.com They have everything on html, xhtml, css, javascript, and much much more. For colors search "color schemer" in google, and click the third link. That will give you a color wheel which you can then utilize to give depth to your webpage(s). Also, go to http://www.squidfingers.com for almost 160 free patterns you can use for the backgrounds.

Re: What would be the best way to go about getting a website?

Check your school, if affiliated with one. One of the other Career Tech teachers sold us some space with root FTP and some other webhosting goodies for only $45/mo. Not only is it good for the price, but we are supporting someone within the school that we know. Since there is an actual web design group on our team this year, we scrapped the CMS, changed domains (which I now use the old hosting for personal use) and plan on having a pretty nice site.

Re: What would be the best way to go about getting a website?

The 500mb limit is old news, right now I'm capping teams at 5gb.. but even that is a loose limit, at this point, I don't really care how much space they use... I have the disk space in my server to spare.

The intrest form has moved though, http://www.usfirsthost.com/?page_id=3

Thanks!

Matt

You can also host your own website by using a webserver from http://httpd.apache.org/ which is completely free. You'll probably also want a DNS name and an internet connection too.

Or if you use (Ubuntu) Linux or Mac OS X, Apache is built into the operating system. All it takes is a few clicks or commands in Terminal, and you're in business.

Just note that a lot of ISPs may not like it when you try to host websites yourself, and they may even block all incoming port 80 traffic.

Re: What would be the best way to go about getting a website?

We use the Home package from 1and1 hosting. http://order.1and1.com/xml/order/Hos...op&__lf=Static

The package is a little different than what we have now, but for $5 a month we have 50gb of storage and 1.2 TB of monthly bandwidth limit... but they really just provide FTP access with a domain, and not many web development tools.

Re: What would be the best way to go about getting a website?

We're using the Developer package from 1&1, Linux Hosting. I like it so far, but my problem is that Drupal won't use Clean URL's because I don't have the proper server access.

Re: What would be the best way to go about getting a website?

I've had problems with 1and1 shared hosting plans in the past. The site would be down for hours at random times. You are not given root access (see compliant above), and the server your hosted on is shared with hundreds of other people so bandwidth can fluctuate at any given time. I've since dropped them and now use www.Ezzi.net . Its not cheap but you can expect 100% uptime and great technical support. Even better, its hosted in America and not overseas like my server at 1and1 was. To use ezzi, you pretty much have to be extremely savy in linux as you are given nothing else but a ssh connection to build your server.

If you're looking for host with lots of extras try www.siteground.com . They'll help you setup a forum, CMS program or whatnot. You can even purchase a domain through them and have it linked to your account pretty easily. I would only recommend them to beginners to web hosting. Plans are dirt cheap too compared to other hosters.

Re: What would be the best way to go about getting a website?

If you desire SSH access, drop me a line... let me know what you want to do and if you've got a good enough reason, I might be persuaded to give it to you. Other than that, I offer FTP/SFTP as well as FrontPage (though I hate it.)

Their are a host of different web technologies I support... ask and I'll let you know if I've got it.

Matt
