Favorite Moment of FIRST (was: Noobs)

Being a noob myself, the question bears asking , What is your favorite part of robotics so far and the inevitable why?

I am far from a FIRST noob, but I'd have to say my favorite part is the amazing, fantastic people you meet.

You spend six weeks of your life driving yourself nuts, losing sleep, and probably injuring yourself. By the time ship day comes, some of the newbies feel like giving up. Teams get to regionals, usually working, but sometimes not so much. Either way, the students learn to have a blast.

By joining Chief Delphi, you have started the process of my favorite part. You end up networking and meeting with so many great mentors and friends. Whether your team wins, or breaks in the middle of a match, your FIRST friends will always be there to help you out.

At regionals, championships, and yes, even on the internet- you will meet inspirational mentors and crazy friends- and the things they have to teach you will stay with you for life.

Cherish it. Enjoy it. It's FIRST at its best.

Same here, but it's either 5, 6, or 11 years, depending on how you count it.

Re: Noobs

This is my 3rd year and I'm hooked, the friendly competition and the adrenaline rush you get during a match doing what you love (because if you're like many of us you lack the ability to play sports ) can not be found anywhere else. The fact that there are endless amounts that you can learn from almost anyone in the FIRST community is quite remarkable, and is one of the many reasons I keep coming back.

My favorite FIRST moment and definitely my favorite thing about FIRST in general is the matches. Particularly last year in the semifinals. Team 703 blocked us and with their incredible drive train broke our arm in half. Within the time we had (we used the time out) between me, another student, and 2 adult mentors we were able to replace the arm and get it working, while resetting our ramps. The fact that I started out not knowing the difference between an allen wrench and a hammer were, and now am able to fix robots just shows how remarkable an experience FIRST is.

You'll never forget the things you learn and the people you meet.

Re: Noobs

It may be hell if your team doesn't work together well at the beginning, but as long as you know your teams limits (funding, experience, etc.) and you base your ideas and your wants towards them, you won't feel that disappointed when your robot is completed. Also, what I like to do is take it one step at a time.
An example is first do drive train. When it is done drive around with it and feel good.
Next would be ball manipulator 1 (for 1923 its a piston to push ball off overpass). Finish that and play around with it...feel good.
Last would be ball manipulator 2 (claw type thing). Finish that and grab the balls a couple of times and feel good.
This way, you have fun. That is my favorite part.
