School Help

Hey everybody! Is anybody good at chemistry? Im pretty much failing my chemistry class and i dont know what to do. I understand the material most of the time but its the test that get me. Im not a good test taker. If anybody has some study habits or ideas of how to not completely fail Chemistry i would greatly appreciate and help you can provide. Thanks everyone!!

always do homework and pay attention to examples in class cause test will most likely be similar to them. doing homework and examples also makes it easier to remember rules for thinigs (ex: balancing reactions, octet rules, solubility rules, redox reactions, acid-base titrations, galvanic cells and electrolysis, organic chemistry, STP, ect.) and formulas/laws during the test. study extra for tests and ask your teacher for some help if you need to. im taking ap chemistry right now.

Ask for a sample exam. Learn how to do those problems, and understand how they work. Likely is that the problems on the real exam will be similar, or will share concepts. There's no better way to learn than doing real problems. And of course, the most important problems (for the purposes of passing the course) are those on the exam

Which chem book are you using? Publisher, author, and edition. This will help me find you online resources for that book. Trust me, I used to suck in physics honors but just after taking the book's online quizzes and doing practice work on the website, I went from constant B+'s to A's. So yea, just post up that info and I'll find what I can.

Have you talked to the teacher at all about your performance? They person who can help you the most is the teacher. (Don't be afraid to, its their job to help you get through the class if you need help!) I personally am not a good test taker either.
But, do you study for your tests? If so, how early in advance. Try to start reviewing material at least a day in advance.
Also, doing the homework (and by doing I mean - DOING!) will make everything so much easier. I know homework can get annoying and frustrating, but teachers don't give you homework to make you miserable, they give it to you because its what will help you grasp the concepts the best.
Like someone said before, practice exams are helpful - but, dont rely on these for everything you will need to know for the actual exam because the teacher may mix things up a bit.

Something else you may want to look into is if your school has any sort of peer tutoring avaliable. I am one of the leaders of the California Scholarship Federation at my school, and we offer free drop-in peer tutoring after school and also one-on-one tutoring. I have tutored many people who only want to meet before tests to review and to help them study by quizzing them (this seems to be highly effective). Sometimes just having someone else explain it helps them remember it more. (I'm currently tutoring someone in honors chemistry, and this helps her a lot!) This can be a great resource if your school has something like this.

Yeah, deffinitly go to peer tutoring. I've tutored kids and helped them go from F's in science to at least C's. This is done by helping them on homework and also aggressively tackling study guides for tests and quizzes.

I'll echo the peer tutoring.

Here at School of Mines, study groups are encouraged (one might see something someone else misses), as are talking to the profs and dropping by the tutoring center under the library.

I find that for physics, a talk with my TA can help a lot--I don't think I could have finished my last assignment without his showing me one or two problems. (Of course, showing up for recitation can help too--I just hadn't been able to make it to that particular one.)

Then again, I'm in college--but I'm sure you can find some way of doing this in high school, too.
