Are Vex sliders allowed in the 2008-2009 FTC game?

No. The rules specifically mention that we cannot use those.

Thanks. My team asked me, and I wasn't sure. I haven't obsessively read the rulebook, much to my dismay.

To me this is a learning opportunity for them. When my kids ask me, I tell them to go look in the rule book and find it themselves.
