2009 FIRST Scholarship News – December Update
Greetings Teams,

Between now and Kickoff is a great time for high school juniors and seniors to be looking at the list of 2009 FIRST Scholarships at
www.usfirst.org/scholarships (just follow the link to the 2009 FIRST Scholarship Opportunities). There are scholarships from over 120 colleges and organizations that are directed specifically at FIRST students like you! Don’t miss out on this great opportunity to help pay for college.

Now you can print a summary list of the current 2009 FIRST Scholarships Listed by State. The link to this printable list is on the 2009 FIRST Scholarship Opportunities page. This is a good list to share with your parents, other teammates, and your guidance counselor.

Changes to Scholarships:

Please note that since our last FIRST Scholarship News email blast, there has been a change:
  • Idaho State University has now confirmed a $3,000 scholarship for 2009.
Keep checking the website for new and updated information. Hint: you can sort the scholarship list by clicking on the Date Posted column header and look at any new or updated listings since the date you last visited the site.
Seniors: These scholarships have application deadlines during January:

Adelphi University
Adelphi University invites your application for consideration of FIRST Scholarships!
FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) Scholarships
FIRST scholarships are awarded to one full-time incoming freshman who has participated in the FIRST FRC or FTC programs or has been a mentor for an FLL team during his/her high school career.
To Apply go to http://ecampus.adelphi.edu/sfs/ and click on scholarships. The application form is online for your convenience.

Application Process: A student is encouraged to first file an admissions application and then complete and file the FIRST Scholarship Application form no later than January 1 to ensure maximum eligibility. An essay and letter of recommendation must also accompany the completed scholarship application form.

Special Provisions: Students are encouraged to submit a FAFSA each year and must meet the following minimum standards: (1) acceptance into and continued enrollment in full-time study (minimum 12 credits) leading to a bachelor's degree; and (2) the student must have currently participated in a qualified FIRST program; and (3) the student must maintain a 3.0 or better cumulative grade point average for renewal; and (4) the student is not subject to any disciplinary action.

Notification: Eligible students will receive a letter of notification from the Scholarship Committee. After filing the FAFSA, a financial assistance award summary detailing all financial aid will be mailed to the student.

Society of Women Engineers – Space Coast Section (SWE-SC)
Scholarships for Graduating Senior Women
SWE-SC awards an annual scholarship to a graduating high school senior girl going to school anywhere in Florida who is a team member of a FIRST FRC team or FTC team and entering an engineering program. Local scholarships are also available for female students residing in Brevard, Indian River, or Volusia counties who will enroll in a freshman in engineering, mathematics and/or computer science program are awarded annually. Applications are available at http://www.swe-sc.org/Scholarship/. Deadlines are January 31, 2009 for the high school program, and March 15, 2009 for the SWE/FIRST program.
SWE sponsors over $400,000 in national scholarships open to women pursuing baccalaureate or graduate degrees in engineering or computer science. Web applications for scholarships open on March 1, 2009, and are due May 15, 2009. Information can be found at http://societyofwomenengineers.swe.org/ (click on “Scholarships”)
