Chat Room
Hi, so after a bit of google searching, and forum searching, I seam to have discovered that none of the old chatrooms are used anymore. Is this the case or did I not dig deep enough? And also, is anyone interested in using a chat room again?

Re: Chat Room
Going along with the chat room idea.. I read some ware on here about Teamspeak, I think that would be a VERY good idea.. We can have some discussions about things. It would be nice.

Re: Chat Room
Teamspeak would be interesting, so long as not too many people were in. I like the idea of IRC or something because it allows a faster response than a forum, but not requiring headsets/mics, etc. Plus I can see/respond while I'm at work and I don't think my boss would like it much if I used TS at work. But maybe having a TS server for smaller chats? so and IRC chat for the general topics, but if someone needed some more help a small group could join a TS channel to chat about it when needed?

Re: Chat Room
I think a chatroom would be a good idea, seeing as how opinions are what i seek in trying to help my team with design... I happen to be a worrier in my team.

Re: Chat Room
i like the idea of it the only problem i see with it is the moderation of it and kicking out of people who are being inappropriate.
Things to think of 1. who would moderate 2. what are the rules 3. what is to be discussed where 4. accuracy of information given (not all experts will be on at 2-4am like some of us ) |

Re: Chat Room
Good point...who would make sure the mechanics of this chat room would go as smooth as it should?

Rules should be similar to the forum here, basically all boiling down to gracious professionalism. And, just like any information given here, or anywhere else, take what doesn't come from a known reliable source with a grain of salt. The server I'm running has super-ops, ops, half-ops, voices, and I think half-voices, which moderators could use to help keep track of who's a reliable source and who hasn't proven themselves yet. Any thoughts? |

Re: Chat Room
No problem with you at all, just the way you're trying to get there.
![]() This chatroom uses something called IRC (Internet Relay Chat) to access the chatroom. You're best off using a Java client (such as the one located here) to connect to the server. Feel free to PM me if you need any other help getting there! There's a lot of people (read: 20-30) hanging out in the room on freenode already. I don't really see a need to start a new room; it just fragments the community. |

##FRC is fairly open, anyone can change a topic for news or what not, there are a handful people (including me) able to mute trolls (or ban for join floods), or change channel modes/lock the topic, etc, but none of them stay opped (I find it distracting in a "community" channel). Regarding TeamSpeak, it has bad operating system support (to it's credit it is getting better), I personally recommend the far superior Mumble. Last edited by Nibbles : 06-01-2009 at 19:41. |

Re: Chat Room
The #firstrobotics channel at irc.freenode.net has been going since 2001 or so(I don't remember exactly how long) I remember that I joined in 2005 and its still going strong today, I'd encourage everyone to join it as well as the many more specific first channels related to FRC specifically as well as FTC and FLL.

Re: Chat Room
I know some other forum sites have shoutboxes that seem to work like chat rooms, plus mods have their powers in the box as well
plus, everything is documented in a neat way |

The Ops are good at their jobs, I said that in ##FRC not #firstrobotics too so ##FRC is where modship is laccking if anywhere (no offense). |

Re: Chat Room
Now that both sides have gotten one say I'd like to make sure you guys don't get started on this again, especially before CD mods have to come clean it up.
