Based on Video it looks like rear wheel drive may be difficult with a trailer.
The drivers seem to get a handle on "drifting".

It looks very nice. A tip I would like to add is you should try and power the front wheels as well. That will make it easier to from a dead stop.

Re: Rookie Team 3111 Week 1 Robot.

Yes you really should power all of the wheels. Right now you are losing approximately half of your available force. Also just a word of advice, regolith has much less friction than a floor like what you are driving on. We did tests yesterday and it takes about 25% longer to accelerate to the same speed on regolith versus linoleum.

Other then that, great job guys!! Have a driving robot early will be a huge part of this competition so good luck.

Yes very good, but that would help a huge amount. And its pretty simple to do also.

Re: Rookie Team 3111 Week 1 Robot.

Nice! Week 1 our rookie year, we were still sitting at a white board.

I'd highly recommend you get that trailer built and start driving with it. While it makes traditional driving more difficult, it seems that there are all sorts of nifty tricks to be picked up.

As everyone else said, be sure you power those wheels! Have you thought about your ball manipulator yet?

Re: Rookie Team 3111 Week 1 Robot.

Cool, you seem to have answered my "friction puzzle"! (showing that two powered wheels cannot overcome the friction of two stationary wheels) with your two wheel drive set up.

Just FYI, it is really a bad idea to leave wheels unpowered this year, since you are wasting normal force on non powered wheels.

the friction each wheel can produce is proportional to the weight on that wheel, but if you divide the weight between four wheels and only power two, you half the available friction!

I'll be happy to clarify if I wasn't clear... let me know!
