Hi, I'm from team 2215.
First of all, I'm not sure I'm in the right forum, so if I'm not please direct me to the right one for my question. We're currently building the Bumps and we have a problem. There were some updates and changes and we didn't have sufficient information, so we ended up having a bump that's 12 inches wide at the top, 13.25 inches high and 32 inches wide at the bottom, which means the incline is about 52 degrees, altough I think we got it wrong and it should be about 37 inches wide at the bottom and have a 45 degrees incline. This happend because we thought the base of the bump is supposed be the exact same length of the tunnel. Or were we right? Can someone please tell me what the real sizes are or at least were I can get them? Thanks, Team 2215 |

http://usfirst.org/roboticsprograms/...nt.aspx?id=452 (section 6 Arena) They are kind of complicated to figure out, but you NEED to be able to understand the field drawings to be able to know what the field will look like. The dimensions in the rules text are not quite descriptive enough.... |

I'm saying that you should be able to click on the link, find the zip file with the arena drawings, and then look them over so you can see which one describes the bump, and use that drawing to make your own bump.
It's not that hard to do, and you'll get it right, and learn stuff in the process. I would measure the one we made, but it's 15 miles away and locked in a secure compound right now. |

If you can't find the drawing, or can't figure out what it means or what the materials are, please ask (and give us the drawing number that you are talking about)
I want to help, sometimes the best help is to show people how to do things themselves. |

I appreciate your good will, but perhaps I have'nt made myself clear enough.
I have the manual, I have all the drawings, all I ask is for someone to tell me whether I got it right or not, so we don't waste our time again building another incorrect bump. So, again, I'm refering to the trapezoid profile of the bump: the top base is 12 inches long, the height is 13.25 inches, and the lower base is 38.5 (=13.25*2+12) inches long (while the side of the tunnel which is in contact with the bump is 32 inches long, which means the bumps extend longer over the length of the FIELD than the tunnel does), making the angle of the sides 45 degrees. Am I right? |

My team had the same debate. The field drawings show a 45 degree cut at the bottom of the ramp, so that's how we made ours.

GE-10047 shows that the length of the support rib, which is inside the bump, is 32.5 inches. But the rib doesn't make the complete triangle, so by adding the distance for the full triangle the interior of the bump is a little over 38.5 inches. Add the plywood shell, and you're around 40.25 inches, plus you still have to add the carpet.

Just coming from building all of ours, I found the quickest solution for me was to rip the plywood to 32-1/2" then cross cut that into 12-7/16" strips. I then made a quick cross cut jig on the table saw with a stop in place to set those pieces in at 45 degrees and contact the blade right at 10-1/4". This yielded 9 ribs per sheet...72 diagonal cuts later they are all 36 ribs.
If anyone did all this with a SkilSaw you have my utmost respect and a steadier hand than I do. The tops and sides are pretty simple as well. If you are only building one bump section ignore me completely...we joined up with other local teams to build a field at a sponsor's place of business (an amazing opportunity for kids, mentors, parents and sponsors from multiple teams to come together and sweat a bit). ![]() |

FE-00033.pdf describes the entire field layout as well as supplies the parts list. Specifically, the Bump is described in GE-10047.pdf. All information necessary to dimension and build is found there.
