I heard from other members of my team that you can drill out a pound of weight from a toughbox. Our team sent me on a mission to find out how to do this but I am unable to find any documentation on how to do so. Can someone give a link or a diagram or something on how to do this?

Re: Lighten Toughboxes
Probably the easiest way is to ask Andy through his site! He is great at quick responses.

Re: Lighten Toughboxes
Most of this weight comes from pocketing the large gears inside the toughbox. I have never attempted this but it should work. You would also want to replace the big square spacer with a few standoffs.

Re: Lighten Toughboxes
Spacers instead of the aluminum housing and aluminum gears, all available on the AndyMark website.

Re: Lighten Toughboxes
look at those big steel gears in it...imagine them with perhaps 6 big holes drilled in them. Or if you have a lathe, imagine them with a thin web connecting the full width center hub to the full with outer gear tooth area.
Also think about the outer casing, and figure out if you could replace it with four tubes made of aluminum (or even hard plastic, such as Delrin). Also look at the AndyMark web page and see what parts are for sale for it. http://andymark.biz/am-0145.html there are lots of things you can do! |
