So what prevents another robot from coming up to you and giving you a love tap in a direction you don't want to go if your wheels can drive sideways?

Your agility. Chances are, they can't go sideways, and will have to realign to hit you if you dodge them.

It's also easier to realign after you get hit.

It is hard to see but those wheels have a lot of friction. It is easier to move a slick wheel robot then this.
