I think most record companies have a deal with YouTube now that they get a cut of the profits from advertising. I think they have a deal with most of the major labels and I want to say it's WB that's still holding out. YT will now detect what music you have in the song and tell you if it's legal or not when you upload. For example, our team video from last year isn't viewable in Germany due to licensing.

It depends on the song and label now. Certain record labels allow their content on YouTube as long as their song is linked to with one of those floating adverts that appear under the video automatically.

Optionally, you can file a fair use claim. A video I posted featured 30 seconds of Enter Sandman in the background as ambient music which was automatically removed. I argued that the educational purpose of the video (FIRST Robotics Competition) combined with the short sample of work unremovable from the video's audio track did not compromise the label's ability to sell the song, and my claim was accepted. This usually takes a few days though.

It is confusing and each year there are tons of questions from teams wanting to use music/videos, especially as part of Chairman's entries.

Something to add to that might be a quick tutorial on how to make music in Garageband or good sites to find open songs.
